Low Oil, Knocking, Vibration - Oh My!

Sorry, I'm bored. Been reading recent posts about low Oil Pressure and Knocking Noises.

My "fresh" engine had a very subtle knock at just off idle, under load.
Here's what I found when I opened up my knocking engine:

Rings2.jpg

All 6 top rings were either split, broken or collapsed

Piston2.jpg

This piston has both detonation damage and what is probably a piece of spark plug or ring marks on top.

Piston1.jpg

This damage is from a "piece of "somethin' " bouncing around.

Pan3.jpg

Bearing shell "chicklets" - oil pan.

Mains5.jpg

Number "4" (thrust) main bearings.

Mains4.jpg

Number "2" spun bearings - tabs are gone...

Mains3.jpg

Another view of number "2", shows just how much metal is gone.

Mains2.jpg

Number "3", also spun.

Mains1.jpg

Number "1" main bearing - down to the copper.

Crank3.jpg

Number "2" crank journal (I think).

Crank2.jpg

Another view of main journal.

Crank1.jpg

All rod journals are not pretty anymore.
ALL rod "big-ends" were egg-shapped from detonation.

Block2.jpg

Thank goodness for competent machine shops - main saddle crack was noticed just before 4-bolt main cap set-up.

Crank was MagnaFluxed and found to be cracked.
The JE Forged Pistons were OK and the Rods were re-sized. In retrospect, I wish that I had popped for a set of Forged Rods, but I'll take my chances.

Re: Low Oil, Knocking, Vibration - Oh My!

That's ugly. Piston damage is prolly ring remnants. Which main bearing turned? Looks like one turned which usually shuts off oil to those rods = not even a happy motor. What's the piece laying in the pan?

Motor back together, in truck - just trying to tie it all up.
Both # 2&3 mains spun.
