Maitnence/Upkeep Costs - 50k mile ty

Hey guys,
I asked some questions a couple months ago about a $8000 high mileage ty I found. I have since forgot that one and saved some money. I found a 50k mile white/white ty not to far away from me. It is completely stock and for sale for $12000. I can afford it with my own money but am on a budget since I am 17. I would have a couple thousand left over after this, and I make about $300 a week. It is a great deal, and I would probably drive it 3-4 days a week, not daily. I would be looking at 800-1000 miles/month. I am definately debating about this purchase so my question is...Do you guys think this would be a stupid decision? and about how much money would I be looking at for regular upkeep every 3000 miles(ignition/fuel system maitnence, plugs, wires...) Another consideration is that my parents will split the cost of an import, like a toyota tacoma. Thanks a lot for your time.

If you keep it mostly stock (for now, at least), I don't think you'll have too much trouble. Cap & rotor is $17, SpiroPro wires are ~$45, plugs are anywhere from $1-$6 each (CR42TS - NGK Iridiums). There's not really much fuel system maintenance other than replacing the $5 filter every now and then. You can usually get the jugs of synthetic oil for under $20, and filters are $4-$12 depending on the brand.

I'd recommend doing the standard mods to it. Rubber IC lines, hotwire the IC pump, insulate the CAC (upper IC). Upgrade the IC pump when it dies, or if you feel it's not doing enough (drop-in Jabsco is ~$100). Upgrade the fuel pump when it dies, or if it's leaning out at the top end (Walbro 255 is ~$110, may want to make/buy a Racetronix harness too - less strain on the stock wiring, plus more voltage at the pump). After you have the new pump, you can get an AFPR and tweak your fuel pressure if you need to. Install the biggest tranny cooler you can, as the tranny is probably the weakest point in the driveline and heat kills trannies.

The rest is pretty much stock S-10 4x4 stuff. Check out the front end. S-trucks are notorious for going through front end parts. Ball joints, idler arm, etc.

I meant to mention, I will have no trouble working on a vehicle doing regular maitnence, but would actually look foward to it to get more familiar with the truck. Also, I have done searches to answer my question but couldnt really find what I was looking for so please dont complain.

As long as it's a solid truck from the get go, and you don't mod to much, you should be alright. Just make sure that it is a solid truck to start out with. Do you have any SyTyer's in your area that could look at it with you? Always good to have experienced eyes :wink:, and a scan tool.

Hate to hear of the parents spiltting the cost of an import. Must make the decsion hard. If this will be your ONLY form of transportation, you'd better take care of it and do the safety mods Bill mentioned before you get to crazy. If you don't take care of these trucks they will let you know. But if you DO take care of em, they will let you know also, beating most anything on the street without breaking to much of a sweat 8)

I hate to say it but I would have to disagree about a 17 year old making $300/wk owning a Ty. No offense but stuff can get really expensive really quick on these beasts. If your parents are offering to slit the cost of an import then I would jump on it. For the same money (your half) you could buy a nice WRX, VR6, any 1.8T or other nice, very reliable cars under some sort of warranty. Chances are (let's be honest) you'll beat the truck racing it and so forth (no slam, I had my share of fast cars growing up too).

Go with the import. Get a nice mid 90's VR6 and work that a bit. You could probably find a nice 1.8T A4 to work too and they can move if desired.

Just my 2 cents. There's always the future to buy a Ty.

Where do you live? Good price on the Ty too.

I was making $300 a week when I got my Sy. Paying $310 a month for the loan payment, plus insurance, 93 octane (I've put 70k on it in 2.5 years also) and all other costs. Very little money left over, but you can do it. If the truck is completely paid for, that's $1200 a month to throw at it. Jabsco, Walbro, AFPR, tranny cooler, ignition, ball joints, random little stuff would be like half of one month. Maybe I'm just really lucky, but in the 2.5 years I've had my Sy, I've done ball joints, idler arm, new wheels and tires, tranny rebuild, dead IC and fuel pumps, fuel filter, ignition stuff a few times, heater core, alternator, A/C compressor, propshaft rebuild. Not counting gas and oil, I figure it to be under $3500 in repairs, even with my really expensive SZ50EPs. In 2.5 years, I've spent about 3 months worth of his money...

The import is probably a better deal, but if you really want the Ty, I think you could do it. I guess it depends on all your other expenses...

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna wait and think about it a little more. The typhoon would be the ultimate truck for me to have, other than $40k and up vehicles. I also suspect that it would pretty much hold its value if I take good care of it, considering it is about $3000 under KBB value.

Yep, right about now I am trying not pull out what hair I have left. With my Ty it has been a uphill battle. Seems like no matter how much I try to improve its well being it leads me into some new adventurious mystery. My friends say sell it, but it puts out more than my wife does no matter how much money I put into her so I say their crazy. I'm TY4LIFE.

Bring them to look at it and point to where it says "mitsubishi" on the turbo. "See dad, it IS an import..." :lol:
