I wish I could have gone, but with my Aunt passing away this past Tuesday, things were kind of hectic. My buddy, Scott Hildebrant, and his dad, John Hildebrant went. I was going to ride with Scott because my TB still isn't here, and I still have a piece of broken cladding thanks to AAA dicking around and going as slow as they possibly can with my claim. I'd have been embarrassed driving up with my cladding missing. I couldn't go either way... I was back and forth between North Carolina and Michigan twice since Thursday.
I'll make a point of going to the Chelsea meet. Nice pictures; I'm jealous.
I talked to Scott and his dad for awhile. Scott got a good deal on his ty, fixed it up and it looks good. They were both nice guys, thanks for telling them about the meet. I didn't get their contact info, but I suppose I can get it from you when I need to. Scott said he would be willing to make up some t-shirts for us for the next event.
It was a great day. Talking to Mack about how these trucks came about was truly a great experience. It was basically him that took the syclone drivetrain and put it in a bravada to create the typhoon. He had some cool original drawings and sketches with him, and he was wearing his Triad jacket.
That white braphoon seen in the pics is really the typhoon prototype, owned by Mark (former lawyer for Triad) They owed him some money as things were getting closed down, and that truck didn't run. He took the truck home, and all was need was a new fuse panel. The truck now has about 55k miles on it, and is a true prototype. His wife daily drives it once a year around memorial day , for a few weeks and thats it. It sits the rest of the time.
The first syclone was a red one with the 3.8L grand national engine in it. I am trying to see if there is any pics of it left somewhere, and hopefully we can get some more stuff out of this.
The marine engines would have been great, because they had the forged pistons / cranks, but with the small production run the companies like Mercruiser and etc were taking all the engines that GM could produce. There was no way that the syty demand was enough to take away from the big companies like Mercruiser to go to our small need.
Many of the prototype trucks were just taken out and abused. It really irritated guys like Mack that these idiots were taking the trucks out and they were getting stolen from a strip club or driven into a wall because they were driving in 3" of snow/slush.
Triad was the company that Mack worked for, that did all the engineering and making of the parts. He said he remembered the guys out in the shop welding up the upper IC's and stuff like that. Mack was with Triad just up until they started making the typhoons. So, after that guys like Mark or Dale would probably know more about where all the stuff went when the project ended.
I mentioned the syty nats to them, and asked if we could get some stuff together for next years nats. I'll be in contact with them, and hopefully we will be able to locate some stuff. I want old pictures, and anything that would sort of create a timeline of the way these were created, built, tested, etc, etc.
I was glad that we had such a good turnout. I think with some more planning we could make this into a yearly event. Next time, the times will be better planned so that everyone knows when we will have lunch, and other types of things can also be scheduled. The thing I'd like to do is find out from everyone if they'd rather see this event be at the track. It would be very cool to have a gathering , BBQ, and racing, to keep things interesting. I don't want to take away from the nationals, but the turnout we had here tells me that another event for the Midwest, MI or OH area would be attractive to many owners.
If anyone has any pics of the prototype red syclone with the 3.8L motor in it, I would really like to see them.
