moving knock sensor

i saw in a thread that some pep are moving the knock sensor. If you do will it hender its performance? would like to try but am afraid to blow the motor. I have replaced everything and am still getting 5-9 deg kr intermitenly. I am running out of hair to pull. am thinking about smc alky injection but really dont want to just patch things.

Serious about performance
I'm in the same boat as you. Don't count on the SMC Alky solving knock; I put it on and my knock did not change at all so far (But I have not had any time to tune the alky after installation.) Does your knock lower if you run 100 Octane or better? Mine does for the most part...

For awhile, after an engine rebuild, I was getting some false knock @ 2000rpms due to a new cam & distributor. Bought a K&N knock sensor setup, installed their sensor in an unused 3/8 x 16 hole near the thermostat housing in the lower intake. Their adapter is a 3/8 x 16 stud w/ a 1/4 NPT female fitting on the other end. The K&N seemed to read the *real* knock correctly, but ignored the false knock - probably coming from the cam / distributor gears. Removed the K&N system & remounted a stock knock sensor in their adapter - seemed to work fine & the ECM didn't hear the false knock. After a few thou miles, the false knock was gone (checked w/ stock mounted sensor), but I left the sensor in the manifold - hell of a lot easier to get at.

FWIW, YMMV, etc.....

Moving Knock Sensor

Barry,

I read your post on 1/30/03 (Tech Talk SyTY Forum) about putting the K&N knock sensing system in some unused port in the front of the manifold. I am putting together a Bowtie block and it doesn't appear to have a threaded hole in the back of the block for the stock Knock Sensor. A couple of questions :

1.) Where did U get the K&N and ~ how much $$ ?

2.) Did it tie into the ECM like the stock one - which I guess U disconnected ?
