NASTE Nats Caravan (Part 2)

Re: NASTE Nats Caravan (Part 2)

ok David, this is my "ideal" trip.

I'd leave the Jersey shore at 6pm Wednesday evening. The meeting point for the caravan is around Cumberland, MD, where we planned on catching up with you and Tom from MD. I can get there in 5 hours 34 mins according to Crapquest. If that holds true, I could get there around 11:30pm. It takes you 2 hours 40 mins to reach the same point, meaning you would have to leave your place around 9pm Wednesday night to get there at the same time as me.

Once meeting up, I'd typically just drive until I got tired, but just for calculation sake, lets assume thats 2am. That should put us just outside of Sutton, WV along I-79. Sutton is 6 hours from the Hotel, which means even with 4 hours of sleep along I-79, getting back on the road around 6am we could get to the Hotel at 12:00 Noon EST, which I believe would be 11:00am Central time in Bowling Green. So since we gain an hour, we can also stop for breakfast sometime after we leave Sutton and the remainder of that hour would buffer the normal gas/pee breaks.

So that would be my ideal trip, not sure if thats appealing to anyone else, but if they are interested Id be more than happy to add anyone else into those calculations.

i do beleive id be game for that thats what i'll plan on doing and i like getting there about noonish time thats cool i'll keep me eye on this thread to c what works out

You should caravan to my place with Dave Goodhue...and tag along from there. Or if you don't have a running truck and his dad doesn't come...ride with him.

Re: NASTE Nats Caravan (Part 2)

Suggestion. In each caravan, have the guy in the rear include a small electric compressor (plug into the cig lighter) for air in a flat tire that the fix a flat did not fully inflate. Also have a tire repair kit, the plug with cement type. Some guys do not like the fix a flat and plugging a tire is easy. Don't even have to take the wheel off the vehicle if you position the tire just right.

Also for the first time towers (was it Vinnie? - maybe others?) - make sure you adjust the mirrors so you can see down the side of the trailer and not just down the side of your tow vehicle. The trailer is usually wider than the truck and you need to see what's coming up behind you for lane changes. Towing at night is cool because you can see headlights under the trailer corner so you know if someone is right behind you. Remember you are quite a bit longer than what you are used to (that's NOT what she said) and will take longer to make left turns before the back end clears oncoming traffic so don't try to beat the other guy.

If you are going thru toll booths don't try to get closer than an arms length for the ultimate slam dunk into the basket. Again the trailer may be wider than your tow vehicle and the wheels may not clear the high curbs at the booth.

Tractor trailers coming up behind you will push your rig before he gets to the side of you. You get used to that one real fast, especially with a large enclosed trailer.

Make sure the brake box is set properly. You don't want the trailer brakes to lock up prematurely but you also don't want them to be lazy where it takes forever to stop.

I'm sure you will be cool. If you do run into toll booths, try to line up with another rig. Toll booth racing is cool

Got one!

Good tips, thanks. But I'm not racing out of toll booths...that can't be good for the tranny and I'm driving someon elses (towing) truck.

Ok....lets officially state that the Renz/State College, PA group is leaving at 1:30am on Thursday, August 6th. We'll plan on meeting up with the Morgan group for breakfast at a TBA location, probably about 7-8am or so.

1:30am departure from State College would put you around Sutton, WV at approximately 6am, which would be perfect.

I'm personally leaning towards stopping to rest (myself) vs. blowing straight through because I know I'm gonna get tired, typically I cannot "sleep in" the night before a road trip, I dont know why, and if things go like they normally do, Ill still be working on the car/trophies/packing or doing other last min things the day I leave anyway, instead of resting, plus the 4 hour sleep break also gives a bigger cushion to relax and not have to worry about making it to someplace at a specific time.

So its not looking good for me driving my Syclone, a less than 5% chance. I am just running out of time to get it running and back together. I gotta decide what to do. Still drive out or fly out? If I am going to fly out I probably have to make a decision in the next day. Flying allows me to save 2 vacations, day driving out if fun but tiring.

If I drive out to Renz's, can I catch a ride with somone? Wheels do you need a driver (or have room for one) if your basically driving straight through?

As of right now, i dont have any room. I may end up towing it with my brothers crew cab Ram, but its not 100% just yet.

Dave I am gonna dolly the ty out with the ss and Adam (sy381) and his wife Valerie are gonna ride out and back with me but I have room for one more. If you want to ride out with me you can leave your car here again if you wish and drive out to Renz's with me also since you basically go right by me.

It's a 0 percent chance my Syclone is going now. I got it running last night but I can't get it to idle without giving it gas nevermind even trying to drive it anywhere. The next time I will have any chance to work on it is Thursday after work and I have plans for the coming weekend as well.

My father is planning on going to drive with me to the nationals. He prefer to do a road trip rather than fly. So my plan for right now is to drive my daily driver along with Renz's caravan on Wednesday Night.

sorry to hear that.. you never know even with plans this weekend, a midnight tuning/wrench session could be just what you need to get it perfect.. i'd love to offer help but i'm not much for custom setups at the moment.. I just know how to get stockers running and keep them running

if there is anything i can do to help let me know, i'll be having a marathon session on my truck this weekend, hopefully it goes well.

I just don't have enough time. If I had another weekend I pretty sure I could do it, but this weekend is my family party on Cape Cod. My mother has stage 4 advanced cancer and my uncle is doing the Pan Mass Challenge for her. ( 2 day Cancer Bike Ride) I want to be their in support of her and this is the point where family trumps my Syclone.

of course it does.. driving the truck isn't that important, you'll still have fun without it.
