Need expert engine builders advice (long)

I got my new motor started the other day. That night I drove it around, I noticed at start up I was having 0 oil press until I would start to drive. Then it would go to about 60ish. I checked my oil a few hours before this and noticed it was 1/2 qt low. The book called for 4.5 so thats what I put and didnt think much more of it. When I was driving I hasd no probs what so ever. Next morning I put the 1/2 qt in and noticed I had 80 right at start up. It bearly went below 80 after that. However, I started to hear knock the night before ever so faintly. So I drove throughout the next day and the knock did indeed start to get louder , bearly. I could realyl hear it inside the truck but outside you had to stick your head under and it sounded like it came from the oil pan. So I decided not to drive it anymore as this is what happend to me to build in the first place. So I pulled it out last night to see if my bearings were chewed up again and I didnt really see anything that would cause a knock. 2 of the main bearings looked worse than the others considerably. Rod bearings actually looked pretty decent. There were only 120 miles on the motor at this point. Crank looks to be gorgeous as it did the day Igot it back. So this morning I take all the main and rod caps down to the machine shop and we all tried to figure out what was going on. The main issue at this point is why no oilpres at start those few times? The only thing I did that is questionable is use sealer instead of a gasket at the remote filter housing where it bolts to the block. I did use the o-ring though. Machine shop seemed to think the bearings looked ok and said if anything at all replace just the mains. I ordered new rod and main bearings just to be safe. My main concern is that I get it all back to gether and have the same oil issue. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? Iknow the oil pump is fine cause I had 80lbs all the time after I had full oil cap. I cant imagine 1/2 qt low would cause this as all the oil sits in the bottom of the pan at start up anyway. BTW, never could hear the knock over 110 RPM. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What oil pump are you using? .5 of a quart shouldnt cause anyproblems.

i assume you primed the oil pump/system before starting, right?

just out of curiosity....what kind of assembly lube/grease did you use

What he said,

If you are using a high volume pump you need to mod the oil pump pickup. The body of the pump is longer and the pickup needs to be shortened to keep correct clearance from the bottom of the pan.

And get the correct gasket for the oil line adapter, it seals the filtered and unfiltered oil from each other. Perhaps some of that sealer you used plugged a gallery somewhere?

What are your main and rod clearances? The big pump with rpm might actually be bandaiding to much clearance.

I am using a stock oil pump. Pick up tube weldeed on this time so it doesnt fall off like last itme.

I did prime themotor .

I used Clevitte assembly lube.

I am in the process of checking the oil galleys, and picked up a gasket for the oil filter deal tomorrow.

Decided to pull the crank and have ground again. Also getting a new pump just incase.

0.010 on the rod bearings and 0.030 on the mains. Got some plastigauge today and will see if clearance is an issue when I get my crank and new bearings back.

Yea, did you prime it. No prime, no oil throught the engine and the lines to the remote filter could cause some starvation.

Which bearings look bad and exactly what do they look like? Lose any bearing material that may now actually be floating thru the engine?

A 20lb jump in pressure does not sound right either. Your engine builder should have some idea of what kind of pressure you should have.

Can you post pics of the bearings?

Well, I can post pics of the bearings but tell me how to resize the image cause it will look wierd. Didint seem to lose bearing material. The pieces I saw (very very fine) came from the sides of the last main cap. I will go take some pics now. # 1 and # 2 were the worst. #1 worse than #2 thoguh.

You need to put the bearings back in where thay came from and get a micrometer and a dial bore gauge and find out your exact clearance. See if your engine machine shop can do this for you. Other than that you are just guessing. Sounds to me like to much main bearing clearance.

I'm not an expert, but I've experienced machine shop problems before (btdt)...Plastigage will be a waste of time with old bearings....you could have plastigaged it before sealing the bottom end but it won't help you now......take it apart and have everything measured the way bob said, without bearings in the equation....sounds like a possibility that the oil pump main may have been the culprit if the furthest main from it (#1) took the worst hit.....there may be a restriction or too loose #4 (oil pump main)....take it apart and keep track of it....whoever said just replace the bearings and call it a day is wrong, especially if you found debris in the oil pump.....better yet, take it to the best machine shop in your area for an evaluation before you disassemble it.....that motor needs to be stripped and fixed correctly.....in a build room with no dirt and sealed.....good luck man, that sucks....

What is the accepted method for priming the oil system? Use a drill with a homemade rod to spin the oil pump, and do it for a while? Should you have the pressure sensor attached and the key on and look for a rise in oil pressure? What do you all suggest. I need to do it soon.

yes

I think my oil pump came w/ a small tool to attach to it to prime. If not, i just used the end of a distributor.

I've got access to a machine shop at work, so I just turned down some aluminum on the lathe and milled it to fit into the oil pump. I'll turn run it in the drill. Any clue of RPM? I assume don't wind the piss out of it, but it's gotta spin with some speed.....

Re: Need expert engine builders advice (long)

mine pegged the stock oil pressure needle w/ a normal drill. So i wouldn't hit it with anything faster than that. I also only hit it a few times w/ someone watching the gauge just to make sure it wasn't some obscene amount of oil pressure. Just ease into it.
