need some history on my typhoon..

i bought a 92 typhoon about 2 months ago now..bought it with a bad headgasket, since then ive been workin non stop on it, fix one thing find somethin else, rebuilt top end.. now im doin the bottom end.. ive come to the realization, the motor just wasnt built right at all...

first off the motor is pretty fresh, atlest looks that way inside and out.. but the previous builder or owner, had the engin gone thru mildly built, .30 over, kb pistons, rings unknown, assuming kb too..cam i dont know.. diamond push rods, to4e turbo, etc.. for some reason when th emotor was being reassembled.. i duno if they just didnt know what they were doing or was lazy or was just being cheap so they could get rid of it.. but they used a stock bore size $8 felpro paper headgasket set.. ????? why..probably why the head gaskets failed....lol i get that all fixed, head work vavle seals etc.. put it back together with cometic head gaskets .. get the thing running, now i start to hear a knock from under the car..get the oil pan off.. every one of the rods had play in them..i pull a end cap, bearing is trashed.. so now.. i pull the motor, start getting the bottom end taken apart to get the crank and bearings taken care of..while im tearin all this down.. i start pullin off main caps, rods caps.. every bearing is done for.. then i figure out then on the last build .. the crank had been turned(machined), and as with the head gaskets.. they used stock size bearings instead of the right size to compensate for the machine work.. and on top of that... none of the rod bolts, or main bolts were torqued.. it was like they just tightened them till they thought they were tight..

im gona get this thing back up to where it needs to be.. the truck is super clean.. 98k miles.. but this motor stuff so far has not been correct at all...

so i need to see if i can get some history on this truck, see if anyone knew the previous owner, or knows the truck.. so i can see what else has been done, as far as ecu drive train ect.. i know the injectors are too small for what it has.. the one thing the dealership told me.. " this typhoon is a beast but it gets real bad fuel cut" lol..

vin is 1GDCT18ZXN0812132, i purchased it right outside of columbus ohio at a dealership..

any help would be great guys.... i wana be a member of the operational typhoon community.. but im almost at my breaking point with this one.. lol

heres some pics of it right before i started taking it apart the first time..

I remember a for sale ad about a year ago with an all black Ty for sale in the Columbus area. I wonder if this was it. The truck was pretty mint in the pics he had posted. I think there may have been a very small rust spot above the back window maybe, or inside the tailgate? I just tried to find the post but couldn't find it. The mileage sounds about right too.

Re: need some history on my typhoon..

This truck has been on and off Ebay and Craigslist several times within the past year. According to one of the Ebay ads; this truck was originally owned by Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons.

A dealer who got it in a trade joined here and asked a few questions about it. When that dealer got the truck there was no boost controller installed and the from what others on this site learned from the previous Ebay sellers the boost control had been missing for some time.

I remember that dealer saying he was going to get rid of it because of all the potential problems.

Re: need some history on my typhoon..

Here's the Ebay ad from September 2009

"
Up for auction is a beautiful black 1992 GMC Typhoon originally owned by Joe Dumars (Ex pro basketball player and now President of the Detroit Pistons), I have the original registration with his autograph on it. It is in excellent condition, has been lowered 2 inches and has 18 inch Z06 wheels, Tial 35mm wastegate, car alarm, remote start, battery located in trunk and with these NEW parts: rebuilt engine (camshaft is 473/500 lift 208/212 duration and 113 lobe separation), PTE 52 turbo, paint, Cooper tires, Baer front cross drilled and slotted rotors and pads, upper ball joints, front axle seals, alignment, Good Year hi-miler radiator hoses, intercooler pump, fuel pressure gauge on fuel rail, boost gauge, headlights and fog lights. There is only about 250 miles on the engine rebuild and everything listed above. It is a beautiful truck but there are a few items that could be fixed or not, the cruise doesn't work, the hinge for the console lid needs replaced, drivers window makes a click sound when going down, cargo area carpet is trashed but I have an excellent replacement from another vehicle, needs a manual boost controller because the boost goes too high, there is a vacuum leak at the heater controls (as a result the air doesn't switch direction from feet to dash to defrost) and a small oil leak where the turbo return line goes into the oil pan (probably just needs new thread sealant on the threads), ABS light is on (brakes work great, probably just a sensor at the wheel), spare tire needs replaced.

I forgot to mention that it also has MB Quart speakers, new O2 sensor and 3 inch exhaust that dumps before the rear axle.

This is a true NO RESERVE auction, the winning bidder above $7000 will own this beautiful Typhoon.

Winning bidder is responsible for organizing and paying for shipping.

Call me (Gerald) with any questions 248.238.0520.

Title is in hand, clear and ready to go.

Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.

Starting Bid $7000
The turbo is a PTE 52 which has a 62mm turbine and a 59mm compressor and capable of 595hp which I wouldn't suggest going that high because the bottom end isn't built for that much hp. I think there was head work done, trying to find out from the previous owner, I know it has roller rockers. A/C and heat work, I had it fixed before, there is a little rubber diaphram behind the controls that I just pressed on and the leak stopped, I will try to fix it again and put some silicone grease on it this time.

ye there was no boost controller in it.. but it had a tial wastegate.. so boost woulda been regulated by the wastegate spring.. and i beleve its a 10 lb spring that was in it.. do you remember the name of the carlot? i got it from denny dodson in johnstown right outside columbus

Re: need some history on my typhoon..

yea thats the truck.. down to the brakes, console lid, exhaust radiator hoses, and the seals on the front axle assembly.. i can tell that has been done recently..and the drivers window.. etc.. i dont think that is the same turbo that is on here now though..

i also found the thread of the guy that made the trhead asking about it cuz he was gona take it on trade for his malibu.. his description of it dont match though.. the rima arent rashed one bit.. and the interior other then the center console hinge is almost perfect..

ok.. now i know what it had for cam

Re: need some history on my typhoon..

i found it on autorader from denny dotson.. what did his craigslist ad say about it.. and his asking price.. i think he was blowin smoke to get me to buy it.. i think he got it in non runnin form

Here's the dealer's thread I was talking about it. It turns this dealer did not make the trade.

http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=73194&highlight=joe+dumars

I have a Craigslist ad from April saved and it was at Denny Dotson's then. In September '09 it was in Lake Orion, MI; sorry no dealer name from then but there is a contact name and phone number in my post with the Ebay ad.
:rotf: leave it to Powercat to dig up the dirt on these trucks!! Its not the one I was thinking of.

Actually on closer inspection the April ad was Autotrader and I don't have a price recorded, but I do remember seeing the ad and $9500 or $9995 comes to mind.

It was definitely a price that I shook my head at given the past discussions of this truck.

It's too bad you didn't find us until after the purchase.

Re: need some history on my typhoon..

yea hes the man.. lol..i googled joe dumars typhoon.. found a few sites talking about it.. one was way of.. said it was ina bad accident that buckled the roof etc.. i own a custom / body shop, and i see no signs of that kinda damage though.. everything lines up damn near perfect other then the front bumper which was loose

I'm glad that you didn't over pay; the members of this site have seen plenty of new owners who were sold a piss poor truck for a high price.

lol.. yea.. i wont buy somethin unless i know ill come out on top if things dont go as planned.. no matter how bad i want it.. bu tin person, this truck is one of the cleanest ive seen in along time.. looks like its got alot less then 98k miles on it thats for sure.. still not sure how this story came about though

http://motownmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?113562-Craigslist-Find-*Typhoon*

the carfax came back clear of everything.. but that dont mean much i know.. but if the truck was damaged that bad.. they paid ALOT!! of money out of pocket to get this thing back to how its spose to be.. the truck is very solid.. everything opens and closes like its spose to (minus the center console lid) and lines up better then some brand new cars ive seen.. if this truck was damaged that bad... the guys that repaired it are VERY good at what they do.. the fram looks un touched too.. usualyif a frame is bent that bad.. the body mounts usually have to have some kind of shims and the truck will set crooked.. and none of that is th case from what ive seen so far..
