new vs old cranks

i could have sworn this was a topic before, but i cant find it right now, get WAY too many replies in return.

anyway, i got an e-mail back from the Cryo-treatment place here in NJ, well it turns out their site is out of date and they have since moved to Connecticut, so thats out.

I'm just gonna clean up the stock crank and toss it back in. My question is this. I will be picking up a 2000 4.3L engine soon too, is there any design difference or improvments in the newer crank VS the old ones?

thanks.

I used the stock crank from a Syclone motor. I had it balanced and polished. I have a crank from an 2001 4.3 boat motor in the shop if you want it. It's just taking up space. Are you using the blance shaft motor for your build?

The newer cranks, about 96 or so and newer have lightened crank pins.

Back in about 99-2000 there was a campaign for the 4.3 to removed the oil pan and inspect these cranks for cracking. I've never seen a cracked one myself but that is enough for me to not use a lightened one in anything that makes some HP.

Just some food for thought.

ok, stock 92 crank it is :)

Mark, no im not using the balance shaft motor for my build. Im just getting a good deal on it so im buying it cause the heads alone are worth more than what im getting it for.

What are you doing to "clean it up"? I'm curious since I'm in a similar boat. My ty crank looks good but a local shop wants like 180 for a crank exchange. I give them mine and they give me one that has been resurfaced with matching bearings. Is there anything I can do to prep the crank or is this something exclusive to the capabilities of a machine shop? Sorry if I'm hi-jacking.
