Hello, after spending very littletime looking for info on the syclone/typhoon, I came apon this sight. The reason I am interesed is that I have a 90astro AWD. My plan is to swap a SBC into it w/ a power adder. But a few days ago, my friend called me up after encountering a turbo astro. This made realize the possibilities of my van. So now I'm looking for a syclone motor, good or bad, and all of the accesories (comp, wiring) to make it run. I am painting the van black and plan on putting flames on it. Last night, I finished all of the body work, mainly dings and little dents, and sprayed primer on it. The final car would be a semi-sleeper.

But if all else fails, I will buy a syclone or typhoon ::brews::

I like the idea, but you gotta ask yourself how fast do you want to go?

if it's pretty fast the stock syty parts will do you no good bc you will just replace all of them sooner or later. the intake are about all you will need. and you dont even need those anymore. you can just convert a edelbrock.


depends on your budget and how fast you wanna go.

You could have one really quick Mystery Machine!!! Shoot for the Sy/Ty first. You'll get enough headaches w/it but at least it will be already put together! Good luck... :drinking: :D

yes, there are turbo kits. but how complete of a kit do you want/need?

I wouldn't bother with most of the syty parts. They are too expensive versus the return.

Find a set of exhaust manifolds, convert the Edelbrock intake to MPFI,use stock vortec heads, 50lbs. injectors, Ultimate chip head-cam version, PTE turbo.
Too me this would be the route I would go if I had no syty parts and really wanted a turbo V6.

This would make one badass van.

Otherwise there is a company that makes kits for the 4.3.

If you can cram a SBC in the van you might as well throw a big turbo on it and have a helluva sleeper... Don't bother with a Syclone motor if you can't find one cheap. It'll cost just as much for either.

you have to understand we geta ton of people in here always saying they are gonna do this and that with a syclone motor........ so people get kinda pissy about answering the same questions over and over.

on the other hand, i think it would be funny as shit to do an astro van with a turbo 4.3.

you can probably buy a complete syclone motor/harness/computer from a wreck truck if you keep your eyes peeled. or you can get all aftermarket stuff adn build your own 4.3 that will run from the syty ECM. there are so many possibilities now its retarted. theres not a single syclone specific part you need to build a turbo 4.3 and if thats not enough, you can also use our ECM's to run a V8.

if you can dream it up it can be done..... just depends on your budget.

the only dificult parts to get for a turbo 4.3 are the intakes, exhaust manifolds, and turbos.

you can modify a carb manifold if you cant find a syty intake. you can buy ATR headers, if you cant score a set of sy/ty exhaust manifolds, and you can get a PTE turbo if your needin something bigger than the stocker (which you can buy used for around $200)

shoot go for it bro, i think, as long as you dont botch up a sy or a ty, more power to ya, we know what to get for the truck and more about it than he does, so whats wrong, quit hating.
theres a motor on ebay right now, maybe it has sold, i dont know, search for gmc typhoon syclone, it was going for 1050.00 not bad. Anyways, if you planned on building it up, that would be a good foundation. Along with that, i am unaware of the drivetrain on an astro, is it the same a a syty, if not actual PN's but spacewise do our parts fit?

Well, after realizing that I could pick one up cheap at a local junk yard, I bought an LS1 with everything and 60k miles. Swap kit is next. A small block will fit under the hood of an astro. The only major change is the fan assembly. I can either go for an electric fan or a more compact clutch fan. I'm going for the electric fan. Also, a turbo is not easy to fit under the hood on an astro, so I'll probably get an s/c of some sort (twin screw, centrifical, roots (oh yeah))

A Ls1 in a Astro. Well I have seen weirder combos. :wink:

Personally minivans and me have nothing in common.

Although the same could be said for 9 sec 1/4 times and a truck.

Keep us or at least me informed with your swap with pics.

Can't wait to see the look on some poor unsuspecting guys face when he gets smoked by a minivan.
