Odometer motor replacement compatability (Resolved)

As you can see here http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78970 I need a new odometer motor.

Before buy a SyTy cluster, I was wondering if anyone knows of any other compatible motor. Ebay Sunbird clusters (non-turbo) look like they use very similar odometers and gauges, and I would rather use one of them than pay 10x for a SYTy one and one and hack it up. Anyone?

Re: Odometer motor replacement compatability

I have a 95 Astro Van cluster and motor all apart in front of me. The motor looks the same. Mounting, gear, size, etc. My motor has 4 connection 'studs' that poke into connectors on the board.. Yours looks like it has a P/circuit extension with 4 conductors. I think it could well be the same. Or certainly the same electrically, and you would have to adapt the harness/wiring.

Might want to go pick-a-parting. Also, post a pic of the connections on the rear of your motor. And I can evaluate if this motor I have will work for you. If so, you can have it to try.

I was going to buy that "spider" cluster. I should've bought it before I told you.

I put it back together last night, but i will work on it again this week and take more pics. I also bought a sunbird cluster today and will see what that motor looks like when i get it. I'll keep you informed.

Re: Odometer motor replacement compatability

Sunbird cluster was delivered today so I got to see if its odometer motor would work.

Hard to see, but the black top on both motors is the same, with the same numbers and markings.

Where the Sy odometer goes (You can see the plug, which is the same)

Back in and ready to go.

After a quick trip around the block, I verified that the mileage reads correctly. Only difference between the two motors is the white backing plate, and the length of the cords.

Congrats! I was 90% sure it would work. Probably going to see all the clusters get bought up now. :banghead:

It also looks like my AstroVan motor would work too. The wiring board on the rear pushes over the studs. It would be simple to pry the wiring pigtail off the old, and press on to the new. You could have done that too if the wiring was too short on the sunbird motor.

I was wondering if that would work. The Sunbird pigtail was about 2 inches longer that the Sy one, so it wasn't an issue, but its good to know if I ever need to to put a Sy motor in a Sunfire cluster.

Re: Odometer motor replacement compatability (Resolved)

I want to thank Ryan for doing this thread 2-1/2 years ago. Yesterday I installed the 95 AstroVan cluster's odometer motor in the trip position in the Typhoon. It works great. I was correct with my original assumption: That the contact board and pigtail from the Ty motor could be pried off the defective motor, and reinstalled on the Astro motor. It did, easy-peasy.

Thanks Ryan, or I may not have ever known that there are other compatible motors in other car-lines.
