Oil Change 101

Was talking to a Supra Owner today and telling him I had to do an oil change and some maintenance before the nats...

Anyhow, he asked if I purged the old oil out of the system before refilling.
He said he just pulls the coil wire and turns it over a few times once the drain plug is pulled just to pump the last of the dirty oil back into the pan.
He said he does this on anything turbo to get the most dirty stuff out.

I have been just draining and refilling.
Does anyone "Purge" there dirty oil changes like this?
I know I have heard of it in more than one place, but turning over an engine with no il is a no no in my book.

I wouldn't turn the engine over without oil in it. It just doesn't sound right. Good oil and a good filter and frequent changes will do the job just fine.

I agree.
I think the minute amount that is retained in the galleys is minimal and would probably amount to 2% (scientific methods used for derivation) or less of total oil capacity.

no oil=no bearings

Just called my friend who works for Toyota and he pretty much said the same thing, and the problem to doing the cranking to get the oil out is that the pump needs oil in it and that you start sucking air into the pump, then the pump starts to go...

On another note one of the mechanics he works with (Portland area) is building his tt-supra up to have 1000+hp at the crank and 900+hp at the rear  , turbos have been moded, forged pistons, nitros, chips, ect... I wonder if he'll have to get a pilots license?

how often you guys change your oil?

you mean you gotta change it?!

2500-3000 for me.

that BS about synthetic be able to go longer... as hard as i run the truck and what i demand outta it, that oil turns black after a good 3000.....id just assume pay the $4 per quart and keep my motor clean then seeing how long i can let it go.

Do a Google search for the Engine Oil Bible. It gives some scientific background on what happens to oil as it gets older and stuff. Basically the more cold starts you do, the more often you need to change it. However, you can't change it too often. If you're not sure, just go ahead and change it. Like Adam said, these engines work hard, and it's cheap insurance.
