Oil flow direction

I did some searching and could not find an answer. Im considering putting the oil filter right on the block. But I do like the idea of cooling oil. If you had metal in the oil from the previous build you may not want to use the stock oil cooler again.
This leads to me question. If the oil is filtered before it reaches the cooler I don't see an issue reusing the cooler. What direction does it go?

Re: Oil flow direction

Hey buddy I deleted mine it now takes 4 quarts and both my vehicles now take the same filter and its cleaner to change the oil. There is a thread about the oil cooler delete I read and the temp difference with and without is only 15 degrees. Delete that poop! I'm happy I did! Just get the fitting from gm ! Screw it in and shazzam easy clean oil changes!

Re: Oil flow direction

Hey Aaron how you been?! Yeah, I know about how to convert it. I just hate the thought of lost cooling for no reason. I just wanted to know some facts. Im going to be pushing that engine pretty hard. Im not using a water cooled turbo either. Insurance is just nice to have.

Are you referring to the stock cooler and you suspect contamination in the cooler? Then you'd want to filter it -after- the cooler. Better yet not at all because you have no control over the in-filter bypass. If an aftermarket cooler then, in theory, you want to filter the oil before the cooler because hot oil filters "easier." In reality with aftermarket I suspect plumbing-routing of hoses etc will be the determining factor.:2cents:

Re: Oil flow direction

I would never try to reuse the oil cooling system after a bearing failure. The reason being oil filters to not filter 100% on contaminants.

Re: Oil flow direction

I wouldn't risk a motor over it. I'd just pickup a aftermarket oil cooler and new lines if I had to have an oil cooler if it were me.

Re: Oil flow direction

Pump to filter, clean oil to cooler, in cooler picking up contaminants (if any), oil with contaminants goes back to motor. No?

Based on this explanation of the flow, you would not want to reuse a contaminated cooler. If the oil was filtered after the cooler, it may be a little better, although not recommended. Especially since, as stated earlier, you have no control of the filter bypass

Re: Oil flow direction

Did Nolan put block filler in that block? If yes then you want to run a cooler. If no block fill you could prob get away with out it. Me personally I went with a front mount external cooler. (I have block filler) That's a fairly high hp build you have, if it were me I would run a cooler if I was planning on pushing it. What were Nolan's thoughts? This is what I did for an oil cooler just to give you some idea. Hope this helps.

Re: Oil flow direction

Just my personal opinion but I would not run a big cooler like that -without- some form of temp control for the oil. Oil likes to be hot. That is to say at a "normal' temp. Sort-of like Goldilocks, not to hot, not to cold.

You will not have a problem running a big oil cooler with that engine build. Turbo engines in general usually don't have a prob with oil being too cold. Especially engines with a half filled block. A good cooling system controls the heat of the engine/oil fairly well. I have countless low 11 sec 1/4 mile runs under my belt as well as a shit ton of street driving with no probs. Nolan has built over 100 SyTy engines in his days now (i've been told) including mine. If he says run a cooler, run one......This is the cooler he recomended for my build. With that said, Don, I do respect your opinion:tup:
