Oil pressure sender

So far I have had no luck finding the correct sender. The part Advance sold me had the wrong size threaded end. Autozone sold me one that looks identical to my old one but the gauge pegged out when I start the truck. I guess that I will try the dealer tomorrow.

The reason I am changing the sender. The gauge shows the oil pressure dropping to 10lbs. And I'm hoping the sender is faulty. Pressure is normal at startup and climbs to normal when accelerating. Motor is running great and has no funny noises. Sure hope I don't have to replace the bearings.

I did get a mechanical gauge and will install it tomorrow. That will tell me what really is going on. But I want my factory gauge to work also. Does anyone know the part number of a sender that will work in our trucks?

Wish me luck on the pressure.

Re: Oil pressure sender

I replaced mine with the GM one, the first one acted funny from day one and was jumpy. I replaced it a second time and that one worked fine.

i've got an autometer one you can have for cheap , just need to plumb it into the oil filter housing

Re: Oil pressure sender

I bought mine from rockauto and the theaded part was 1/4" instead of 1/2". Picked up a brass reducer and worked perfect.

Re: Oil pressure sender

I installed a mechanical gauge and unfortunately the sender I started with was working fine.

Then I cut the oil filter open and found bearing material.

So tomorrow I start pulling the motor for a rebuild. I don't know what the the cause is. But it looks like I will find out. Less than 2k on last rebuild.. And it was not abused. :shoot:

Oil / Fuel pressure sensor, GM / AC Delco part no. 19244497 (old 10201491) 1989-1993.
1/8-27 NPT, three prong. Closes ignition circuit at 1.5 - 7.5 PSI oil pressure.
Angled brass fitting, GM 10201491 use if required.

Note:
NPT (National Pipe Thread) fractional size does not refer to ID or OD of the threads. It refers to an industry standard for pipe fittings and plugs, not actual size:
1/8 NPT = 3/8" - 27 Threads Per Inch
1/4 NPT = 1/2" - 18 TPI
3/8 NPT = 5/8" - 18 TPI
1/2 NPT = 3/4" - 14 TPI
3/4 NPT = 1" - 11-1/2 TPI

That really blows! Hopefully it just needs bearings and didn't put much wear on any other parts.

On another note, GM has had problems with various types oil pressure senders for the last couple of years, a fairly high percentage are dead upon installation or quit not long after replacement.

Kragen O'reilly auto parts.

Sy (p/n S4087). Do not buy this one This part will not work on stock Sy because the wires will not reach the sensor without the angled brass fitting (or a 6" wire adapter, if anyone makes one).

I bought the one for the Ty.
Master Pro part number is 2-8165.
I also bought some high temp thread locker.

Note: It took me about 15min to change it out.
I removed plug wires 1,2,3.
I disconnected two connectors. 1 to the distributor and the other to the oil sensor.
Then I used a 1-1/16 open end wrench (cut to 3" length) to remove the sensor (tight fit).
Then I used a 7/8 socket on a 12" extension to remove the angled brass fitting.

After cleaning everything and applying the thread locker I put it back together the same way I took it apart.

I hope this helps.

Re: Oil pressure sender

Thanks for the info. I am still without a working factory gauge. I do have a working aftermarket. I did replace the sensor and it's not working either. But I don't remember what brand or part number I used. I will try to find sensor you used.

Have new rebuild engine in my truck. With almost 400 miles its been running well. So hope that continue.
