Piston ring choices

It seems everybody is saying total seal is the way to go, but what else is out there? What is so special about the honing when using total seal rings? How much does a set run for our application?

I have run both total seal and a moly ring. u set up a total seal depending on the total seal you buy. they have about 6 different ones we can use.

a second
and about 3 different types of each one.

I paid about 300 for my top ring total seal setup. but I got the best one they had.

the totals will give you a few ponies back and make for some nice clean valve covers...

We use the JE pro seal rings on all the motors we do with the SRP .030 pistons. They are $125 for the complete set and work fine.

Like John mentioned, there are many different choices, as well as different things you can do to the pistons for better ring seal etc. Just depends on your goals and budget.

Whats that one kind called? the zero gap ones, the shop that build my motor, said that sometimes the rings snap where they slide together. He had never seen it or had it happen, but a story he was told. Anyone else ever hear about that happening.

I just want the motor to last, I want a ring that can give me good engine longevity. Thanks for all your help.

Im either gonna go with the JE 1000 series molys or 5000 series 0-gap molys.

they dont seem to make a standard tension ring in anything above the 5000 series.

I was gonna go with the total seals, but like everyone else im sure, you hear the good stories with the bad. The fact that now I have to find and buy another crank plus I have decided to go with the SRPs over the SpeedPro/TWS has kinda turned me away from blowing the extra cash on the Total Seals.

anyone have opinions on the 1000 series over the 5000 series?

I manufacture aerospace piston rings as my day job.

I bought total seals.

I have seen that design work very well. I would have made my own, but the time, development was not worth the $300 I spent on the rings.

I have put total seals in 2 other engines also, with GREAT success.

I am also going with the trw pistons for my motor, its going to be a daily driver so I need something that will be well suited for just that.
