piston rings

i will be running a set of srp pistons and wanted to know which rings are best suited for street use? have heard alot about totalseal gapless rings, and the sealed power hellfire rings.

I have run both total seal and sealed power... I'd run total seal If I were you.. and I have SRP's too..

I manufacture seal rings daily for aerospace apps, and will be going with total seal myself. (wiht a few of my own tricks thrown in)

While a lot of people use them, many engine builders prefer not to.
From what they have told me, the reason is ring/bore life.
The total seals provide more sealing pressure which wears the rings and bores out faster.

"The total seals provide more sealing pressure which wears the rings and bores out faster."

Pressure as in outward tension?

Or pressure as in cylinder pressures?

I highly doubt the tension is more, or enough to cause issues. I would be more than happy to do some measurements with all the ring testing equipment we have here at work if someone has some rings laying around i can borrow.

I don't believe it is increased ring tension, but due to increased cylinder pressure from a better/tighter seal.

Interesting enough is that there are companies that are marketing coatings for ring faces & cylinders that promote a better seal & improved wear.

Maybe a combination of the two would be the hot ticket.

The total seal design is a well know design that works well.

There are other designs available, but cost would be a major hurdle for most.

What would really be trick for a car is a design that is in the works for a patent with possibly my name on it.

I won't disagree that they work well. But for how long?
For a lot of us, I guess we really don't think of going 100k+ on a high performance build.

But, if they are really the hot ticket, why doesn't every engine manufacturer use them? Probably because longevity is of more concern than performance.

And congrat's if you are working on a new patent. Engineer's that actually produce something useful rock.

i thought that was what the street line of gapless rings was for? i noticed that totalseal makes several different types of rings form street to full blown drag racing.

Ive got a set of childs & albert ZGS rings with maybe 20 minutes of run time and one burnout on them (engine scattered during the burnout   ) if I can find em. Would that suffice for tension measurements?

if that was the case then dont you think that know one would run them? i think if they are good enough for getthosled and wallers motors then they are good enough for mine.

You are blinding yourself to what I said.

Without a doubt they are a better sealing ring.

There are always tradeoff's in the high performance world. Right?
Whether it be camshafts, torque converters, tires, etc. You don't get something for nothing.
So is your goal to go really fast for a limited time (Total-Seals) or fast for a long time (standard rings).
How many people here have over 100k on Total Seals?
Who here has the most miles on there Total-Seals? What is it?

I don't know how long the Total-Seals will last, but of the builders I've talked to, they've always tried to talk me out of them and by a conventional (plasma-moly) ring set.

FWIW, I am running Total-Seals also. Why? Beacuse I want to go fast....someday.

what are your needs? big boost, lots of horsepower, high rpm? race gas, more compression. total seal.

or more of a stock motor with highway cruising and being driven normally and more total miles.

are you the type that doesn't mine ever having to open your motor?

Total seal has a patent on that design.

Car manufactures want to pay 50 cents per ring, not the $5 or more total seal wants. Plain and simple.

Total Seal owner has been to our facility on some issues. (Joe Morarity).

I'm sure if all of car industry wanted to switch to Total Seals, the price difference would become neglible. Supply & demand is all it is.

Nobody should think though, that std. ring technology is worthless.
Just compare the volume of cars that have them to those that don't.
I think that speaks for itself.

i am trying too get the best of both worlds. i know there will be trade offs. all i am looking for is for a mid 11 and still be able to drive the ty everyday. it should not be that hard.

I guess i have my own opinion about rings. :D :D

I am putting total seal in my ty engine, just like I did in my last 2 serious motor builds I have done (not ty motor, 1 350v8, other vw).

i am more than happy with rings. Yes I have had issue with others also.
