Recently had a debate with some folks about the health of our trucks. No flames please......
Question: What is the long-term future for Syclones/Typhoons (the vehicles, its owners, and this website)?

a) Status Quo, - with 20 - 40 enthusiasts gathering at yearly events to display their passion and camaraderie. :squint:

b) Dwindling Support, - with only recycled parts available for purists, and swapped LS drivelines for replacement upgrades. :oops:

c) Increased Demand due to Upswing in Economy - with lower gas prices, job hiring, and muscle car demand driving renewed interest. :tup:

d) None of the above - This website, its owners, and vendors determine SyTy interest (resale, event participation) either upward or downward.
:rant:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First + Second Day Poll Results: 23 Votes
a) Status Quo [4].........................................................................................................17%
b) Dwindling Support [6]............................................................................................26.5%
c) Increased Demand [7]..........................................................................................30%
d) None of the above (Owners determine upward/downward interest) [6].....26.5%
Re: Poll: Whats the future for SyTy Vehicles, Owners, and Website?
I think you'll see the events change somewhat in the years to come. Nats will change from what it has been in the past and regional meets will change as well to reflect the change in type of owner.
In '98 when we all got together Nationally for the first time there was so much to gain from that gathering. We all knew each other from the mailing list and IRC but we didn't know each other as human beings. Nationals changed that. It also gave everyone a chance to digest the different builds and parts on each other's trucks despite the relatively small amount of options out there (unless you were an ATR, KB, Conley, etc... fanboy). Lastly, it was full of genuine excitement. I remember being surprised and amazed at some of the trucks/people/experiences the first 6 Nats I went to (98-03).
But, the landscape has changed. There's less mystery to these trucks to us now. Much less aftermarket support. The new ownership seems less "committed" to the community (I know some of you are exceptions). So, a National gathering is less rewarding than it was in those days past. In the Southeast, we have forged some genuine friendships beyond SyTys and our local gatherings are to nurture those....not the trucks. I personally feel regional gatherings will follow that trend. A group of local owners who can get together as friends, but all share an interest in the trucks. I think Nats will become more a general car show so as to encourage the number of attendees and financial investment of vendors/suppliers/organizers. And I think this needs to happen.
Sadly, the days of Guy Lavy making a 10 sec pass and us all high-five'ing random people are behind us. Now we're pushing the limits of the community, not the trucks.
I can't say too much as I have only owned my truck for 2 years but I have learned a lot from this forum and I look forward to being able to meet some of the guys that have helped me out. I am on rebuild number 2 and I am sure it will not be the last. I am 27 and have wanted a Typhoon since I was a kid and now that I have it I only want to make it better. As far as support for the community I feel closer to this group of people than I do many of my friends simply because there seems to be an understanding between everyone here. Sure, a few guys have burnt people but overall it isn't above the call to gather parts for a member one has never met just because they are at the yard that day. I like that, I think this is a rare group of people.
I would vote B.
After 10 years of ownership, I'm getting rid of mine due to the money required to rebuild the trans. I'm bored & burned out replacing parts on the truck. I plan on remaining on the website & Facebook group.
Yep, everything performance, and cosmetic has been done, and done over. Nobody is breaking any new ground.
I vote A.
One of the nice things is that we can look to other niche communities to see how to adapt to stay alive (or at least how not to). The Turbo Regal community, while substantially larger in number and popularity, suffers from a similar rarity and general public obscurity. They have had to adapt to aftermarket shifts, community swells and dips, etc... We have weathered similar and will surely have more to come. But the core of that community lives on and so will ours. We'll have newcomers that have big ideas only to sell out in months. And we'll have vendors that leave a trail of debt and tears. But those are just facts of life in this market.
Like I said above, the days of sitting in a parking lot telling stories are getting long in the tooth. We have to adapt to remain relevant, even if only amongst ourselves.
My take is that there will always be thousands of ppl that have experienced the trucks,and will always love them.
Everything else is moot.
i'm going for (c) in a perfect world i would hope others share the same ideas,
i think as the years keep growing the history diminishes, just like many other rare collectors that have come and go. but its up to the current owners to keep things moving, if we do stop gathering as much sure it can really be a struggle to keep the history in the open. but im pretty sure its a generation thing if your 35-45 ( as of today ) i think your in that group of people who know them & wont forget or lose interests, lets face it we live in a turbo era, everyone and anyone can make a turbo fast car/truck, but i dont think its about a " turbo fast car" but rather a rare stock form of a fast turbo car such as our syty's, either way its about each individual owner, even if i sell mine i will never forget about my ty ownerships and will always enjoy seeing or talking about them.
Re: Poll: Whats the future for SyTy Vehicles, Owners, and Website?
I say B.
The thing I hear most when I get mine out is "I remember when these came out......". One day that will be replaced with "I remember a guy who had one......". How it's remembered I think will have a great deal to do with the desire for these trucks. If all people hear is they break constantly, handle like poo, need constant maintenance, or other negative stuff, then these trucks become a novelty and not a collector car.
Modded trucks that work and don't break every time you mash the happy pedal ( LS 4L80 ) will be more desired than the rebuilt stocker with Vortecs that need "fine tuning". Not many people want to buy someone else's project. People want a modern drive-train in a classic wrapper.
Parts are not cheap or easy to come by for these trucks as it is and I don't see Eldelbrock designing a new intake manifold for the 4.3 anytime soon. Part of the GN success has to do with strong aftermarket support that keeps developing new parts. We have Sportmachines and some other individuals supporting us thank goodness, but if they close up shop then what?
As for this site and the community, I hope it stays strong and close. I believe it to be essential to owning one of these trucks.
Increased demand. C.
I truly believe a lot of people lost interest in these trucks because they tried to modify them, failed, then sold as a project. New project owner can't afford parts, so it sits in a barn or field until hopefully someone like us restores it.
Having said that, I truly hope that these vehicles get away from "I got a new daily driver and I want to make it go faster". The best way to enjoy these trucks, in my opinion, is to have them as a vehicle that you drive occasionally, and enjoy (working on) a lot. My truck runs great with no real issues. I still get a thrill every time I drive it.
So true matt. Gary has owned his sy for 20 years and his truck is mosty all stock and I just got mine a year ago and we looked for a long time for a stock ty. They were made to go fast but some wanted more out of them so that's when things break and when they break its not a cheap fix which leads to a truck not getting fixed or someone trying to fix it but does not understand how they work because our trucks are a whole different breed from the rest of the hot rods out there. I love my truck and it took me a long time to get it and I hope to keep it running for a long time. Plus if sport machines keeps up the work they are doing we will be able to keep them running. So I hope people like us keep finding and fixing them.
I'll totally agree with you randy.....every time I drive mine it's a thrill over my daily driver pontiac bonneville even though it's an ssei....The typhoon just invigorates me when I accelerate from a stop sign or merge.....I'll never get tired of my Ty.....ever....it'll be a part of my life till I'm dead.....like my dad said if you ever get married son DONT ever let her convince you to sell your pride and joy vehicle.....He says this after he was convinced to sell his Austin healey.....still regrets it to this day. Thanks For The Advice Dad!
Re: Poll: Whats the future for SyTy Vehicles, Owners, and Website?
D........I've watched a lot of literally syty gurus come and go since I've been on here. Ed Hess, bdubb, dig, myclone (rip), smeagol , etc. I've learned basically everything that I know about turbo engines from this site. From mixing xylene to get my first high boost rip around town, to every free mod I could possibly do, building my engine, to putting disc brakes on. I bought my truck off this site in 2001. I've spent many nights till 3am in the morning searching for random shit on here. Me and this website have spent more time together than my current girlfriend and I have. I honestly believe the venders make nothing from these trucks they do it because they were all once us in this never ending battle to beat the sweet car next to us at the stoplight. Appreciate them because without em we would all run high 12's and have to do a lot of tig welding. Most people didn't know what a syty was when i first got mine and they still don't. That is why we have to support the site and the vendors because when they die so do our trucks.:2cents:
Re: Poll: Whats the future for SyTy Vehicles, Owners, and Website?
Not quite sure if I'm answering the poll, but here is my take.
I hope this community continues to grow. There is so much knowledge here that it has made things a bit easier for new owners to get the help they need. I sold my 93 Typhoon close to 7 years ago, and if I was aware of this website and the owners here I just might still have it today. Right now is not the time for me to get back into another Typhoon, but in due time I would love to get another one. This is one of the few forums where members actually know each other by name, which I think is outstanding.
These rare trucks are a thrill to own and drive and I hope that the owners here have the ability to hang on to them long enough to let their kids(If they have any) enjoy them as well.
I thank you all for the daily posts and and input on these great trucks.
