Possible buyer has questions

I recently sold my '94 Supra and I'm looking for something new. I'm considering a Typhoon. I've read all the FAQ's and visited all the links(most of which don't work), but still have some questions. This vehicle would be my daily driver, maybe 8k miles a year. How reliable is a Ty? Judging by many of the posts and links I've read there's a reliability issue w/ Sy/Ty's. I'm used to high maintenance, I owned an RX7 Turbo;-), but I want to to know if it will all be in vane. I do intend to mod the Ty....I can't leave anything stock. I'd like to get into the 12's. Is this too much to ask for a daily driven Ty?
Also, I remember seeing a checklist to use when inspecting a Sy/Ty, but I haven't been able to find it again. Does anyone have a link to this?
Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Syty's are great vehicles, even as daily drivers. It all depends on how you want to take care of it. I bought mine with 100K miles, it now has 140K and it still runs great. Since I bought mine it has been way overly maintained.... changing plugs, oil, cap/rotor, plug wires, fuel inj cleaning, top engine cleaning, etc.

I went with a friend who owned a ty when I bought mine.(someone in your area would probably be happy to help you). He got the vin and posted it to the group, and sure enough there were people that knew of the truck. I would recommend if you find one, post the vin and someone should know of it.

I would say go for it, but be careful that you don't let yourself get sucked in to the maddness... ;p

I've been talking to 2 owners that are pretty local to me. One Ty is wht/wht, but I think it's sold. He has it on Ebay and his reserve is met. The other is grn/gry and the VIN is 1GDCT18Z2P0811057. He's in the Phila, PA area.
My preference is blk/blk. Any reason to consider '92 vs '93, or vice versa??? I remember reading a page comparing the 2 and from what I remember it was mostly cosmetic changes.

Ok, need advice. In my search for a Ty, I've come across a '93 blk/gry w/ 126,000 miles. The owner is asking $10k, but is negotiable. If I can get him down to maybe $8k, is this a good deal? Or should I just get a lower mileage(50-70k) Ty? He said it's missing a piece of cladding. How readily available are these and how much?

if you can get it for 8k, that is a steal! just be careful on which piece of cladding it is....a front bumper is a grand! im sure with a good search, you can find some cladding..i think rockford racecraft still has some.

The ideal situation would be to have another sy or ty owner check it out for you or go with you. However, if you have taken good notes on what to be on the look out for, you should be ok. As far as the mileage issue goes, I would consider paying a a little more for a lower mileage one if i knew from the get go it was going to be my daily driver. But, that's me. That way the chances for damage due to improper maintenance are minimized. That's not to say lower milage trucks aren't beat on too. I discovered that the motor in my truck was replaced under warranty with 25K on it :sad:. HTH

The 93's have seats designed for fat boys,so if you are fat,get a 93. :grin:
93 #1057 has a clean carfax and lived in FL until'01.For some reason this trucks seems familiar to me.

Ok, here's the update.
Ty #1057...owner lists KB mods(fuel injectors, tb, headers and turbo), but doesn't know the specifics. Says previous owner put them on and didn't keep the receipts. My question is....I'm assuming by headers he is talking about exhaust manifold. Do they make aftermarket ex. manifolds for Ty's or do they use the stock one? Any visual clues I could use to determine what's in the truck. The owner also says the drivers window makes a clunk when it reaches the top. It has 18" wheels, 67k miles and he's asking $13,750.
The high mileage TY, VIN #1GDCT18Z5P0818193 is missing the passenger wheel fender cladding. 126,000 miles and I think I can get it for close to $8k.
#1057 is about 70 miles from my house and #8193 is about 1500 miles.
I'm leaning toward #1057, but I really want a '93 blk/blk. Maybe, I'll just keep looking.

Aftermarket headers replace the stock exhaust manifolds. I was going to post a link to Kenne Bell's website so that you could see what they look like but, their site still isn't up and running :sad:. Anywho, if you are even vaguely familiar with what the stock exhaust manifolds look like, you will be able to tell if it has headers or not.

As far as the injectors go, I'm pretty sure that the stock injectors have red plastic that is visible at the tops of the injectors. My truck is 70 miles away in storage or else I would get up and pop the hood and check for ya... I'm not 100% sure what color the KB injectors are supposed to be. Perhaps someone else who has experience with them can chime in.

As for the turbo, I can't give you any definite answers on that one either. The best advice I can give is to look on the housing for any manufacturer's markings. HTH some...
