Possible cladding repair for locals

Alright guys,

At the meet back in October I mentioned to a few of you that I had some urethane compound being formulated specifically for the Sy/Ty cladding. Well, I have the stuff now and have begun the repair of my own broken money pits to see if its up to its hype. So far, I'm two pieces down and it looks like its gonna be a keeper. The only weird thing I noticed though is that it mixes and dries green. And I mean GREEN. This is going to be great for broken tabs, but as for cracked cladding, it would require more cosmetic work to make it look really good. But as far as the tabs go, it seems to be awesome. The tabs are cemented in place but still have some give so that they don't snap off under minor pressure. Again, this is the trial run for this stuff and I'm trying it on my own pieces first. I will keep you all informed as to the progress. Keep your fingers crossed!

Sounds good as I been thinking about this myself.

Sounds like the quick-drying Lord's Adhesive.

Also, Auto Zone has stuff called platic weld that works great for bonding broken plastic parts. It has great structural strength. For filling in cracks, Boater's World or other Marine stores carry Marine Tex. It's an epoxy putty and can be smoothed into cracks, then sanded and painted. Easy to work with but not good for structural strength.

Re: Possible cladding repair for locals

Alright guys,
I have completed the repair of my cladding, have got it all back on my Sy, and it looks just like it should. I will get some pictures of it to show the mass improvement. I know that all the guys from the meet back in October will appreciate the cladding being back on the bed of my truck. I know that the only broken pieces were my tabs on the back side of the cladding, but this stuff works, and even if it's only good for tab repair, it will be invaluable when compared to having to shell out hundreds for entirely new cladding pieces. I can get the urethane from my contact and be able to fix broken tabs with ease. As for broken cladding itself, that may be a little more complicated as the compound currently dries green as stated above. I am trying to get the mix to have a more neutral final color but that may take some time. If anyone is interested in getting their tabs fixed, pm me or shoot an e-mail to Maynard_76240@yahoo.com.

Thanks Jeremy! Yeah, I know it's already been 3 months since then but you can't rush perfection. hahaha  But seriously, I'm excited about this stuff. I see it as a far less expensive alternative to buying new cladding. Should have pics up tomorrow.

Good work! Glad you have it looking sharp again. You need to come down to Dallas and hang out some weekend.

No, not exact replacements.... but, with all the 'storage tub CCHE scoops' being made up for the upcoming Austin meet, SOMEBODY must have a bunch of useless Sterilite Storage Bin lids laying around. That's where I'd start.
