Power steering fluid or ATF?

I'm about to replace my power steering pump and upgrade to the zq8 steering box. My local autoparts store told me to use ATF in the power steering pump and box. I tried searching and didn't find any threads on this. What do you guys think? Should I use ATF or power steering fluid?

You can use Dexron 6 ATF in place of power steering fluid. GM has started doing this to reduce noise in the gear.

I've been doing longer then you've been alive. As threy say back in the day they didn't sell power steering fluid, until some smart marketing guy figured we can sell them half as much and charge twice as much for it, so they started putting ATF in smaller cans and labeling it power steering fluid. The only thing I normally put in besides ATF is I'll add a little Lucas PS additive, it quiet downs a lot of the noise

Personally, I'd stick with power steering fluid on older vehicles. We only put Dexron 6 in the newer stuff like '06, '07 and up.
