Re: prom chip

Damn that sux.
Ide make em buy me a new MEMCAL.
BBZB 1580 was the latest memcal that GM made for the syty clan.
I believe they have better timing maps than previous proms.

Re: prom chip

Check for bent pins. Just installing it backwards shouldnt damage it. The memcal has little lugs that make it only fit into the socket one way- so it may have bent some pins when it was forced. Be carefull if you try to straighten them- if they break, you'll need a new ECM.

Re: prom chip

The part number for a new PROM chip is 16181579 or BBZB 1580. They are discontunied and hard to find. I have one for sale for $185, brand new. It is an AC Delco part. Unless you can find one? Auto zone probably has a computer in stock, for around $125 but after market chips won't preform as well as the 1580.

This is useful.
These chips are fragile and if somebody put it in backwards on purpose they would have to force it on, which I bet would damage it 50% of the time. My guess its the computer that took one for the Team, can we get some pics?

Re: prom chip

Oh yeah, one more thing. Your truck should start with NO chip. I would be in limp mode, and run but not too well. The check engine light will be illuminated or flashing (cant remember) when in this mode. Not starting at all is odd. Check your ecm fuses, under the dash on the drivers side.

Re: prom chip

Scuze me, but whoah! $285.00 for a stock gm memcal?
I just bought one (bbzb1580) from my local dealership for $80.00 new.
And that was w/ the parts guys 10%.
Maybe I missed something.

Re: prom chip

Don't be so critical, lol. I made a mistake, I sell them for $185 and I edit my post to reflect that now, congrats on finding it at your stealer, they used to sell them for $45.
I also, from personal hands on experience, (just my .02)was not able to get my truck started.(would not start) no chip no start. I also tested this theory. But some trucks run different. Better to find out what is wrong before you start buying parts.

Re: prom chip

Ok, after reading sone of these Chip posts, I have a small thread jack. Will it make a difference if I use an ATR pit bull whith my ultimate vs using the 1580? Just curious since the pitbull allows more KR than a stock chip. What is different with the1580?

Re: prom chip

tnsyty- I am not familiar with the ultimate (Ive never seen or used one myself) but if they are like most aftermarket chips, the "stock" chip doesnt matter. It's only retained for its knock retard function. Its parameters are totally bypassed, not added or subtracted from. So if the ultimate is like most others, changing the base chip wont matter.

So If I have an aftermarket chip that allows more KR plugged into my Ultimate, Then I may want to go back with a stock one to get knock down? Anyone else have input?

Re: prom chip

No. If what I think is correct, the stock of aftermarket chip would make no difference. Also having a chip with a higher allowable KR is safer. Stock chips only allow the ECM to retard timing by so many degrees when it senses knock, increasing the maximum knock retard allows the ECM to more fully eliminate knock when its detected.
