Pulled the heads WTF pics*

I pulled the heads to replace what is suposedly a collapsed lifter. I also need to get one of the spark plug holes fixed from crossthreading it.
Take a look at some of the pics. What do the trained eyes of the syty forum see?

Also take look at this crap. Look at the scratches on the cylinder wall.
This truck has 40k on the odometer. Is this really bad or what?

Oh and the scratches dont go all the way around. Is this my noise when cold? Its like a loud tapping.

I could be wrong but kind of looks like maybe you got in to some good detonation.

Is that oil on the heads? or is it antifeeze? if it's oil does it come out from behind the valves?those scratches look like a seized ring, maybe from excess carbon build up, it looks like a 40k engine going by the fact there's no ridge at the top of the cylinders. Has the engine been apart before or is that the first time?.

Re: Pulled the heads WTF pics*

Its the first time its been apart to my knowledge. Youre seeing anti freeze on the heads. Its not oil. Since there is antifreeze does that mean the gasket was partially blown?
What lifters do I need to replace these? Will I be able to tell if one is colapsed by looking at it?
I can feel the ridge with my finger nail. Im not able to feel it otherwise.

if your gunna replace 1 lifter than you might as well replace them all. and then you dont want to put new lifters (roller part) on a used cam. so then you might as well put a bigger cam in. if it was me i would want to check those rings. my buddy has a t-a on boost and spray and when he took the heads off everything looked normal until he pulled the piston and found that the rings were melted to the piston. he didnt even have any heavy scores in the cylinder wall (only a couple hair line marks). you might be catching it in a early stage. go through it now if already that far into it. it will save time later.

Re: Pulled the heads WTF pics*

Based on the last pic in the original sequence that is classical "4 point scoring." Caused by an overheated piston expanding in the same direction as the pin bore and scoring the cyl. The others are proly close behind. Notice (at least in the pic) the bore is smooth 90* to the center line.

How was oil consumption? Hard to say what is to much but the rings won't like that scoring for long.

Did you happen to do a compression or leakdown check?

Curious: How did you know you had a "bad lifter?" And you don't have to pull the heads to change lifters

Just FYI the make a cute little tool for plugs that will chase the threads from the inside out without removing the head. Never tried one but I've seen 'em advertised.

Always a tough decision to do a rebuild but as mentioned you're close already.

My :2cents: on rebuilding as well. Looks as if though the valves are either bent IMHO or maybe just need to be honed/reseated. I have a 93 Vortec 4x4 that taps/hammers on idle = assuming it's a collapsed valve or lifter .... probably sounds the same as yours did but I hate it so it can lockdown whenever as I don't care to fix it.

Is this a stock ty motor or was it rebuilt before? I ask because of the spider that holds the lifters, that's not a stock one.. Unless the older year motors have that.. ??

Good eye. yeah that isn't the stock lifter hold down.

Re: Pulled the heads WTF pics*

Thanks guys. This is all very strange. Looks like I bought a lemon. What makes you guys think the lifters are not stock? Im not following.

Re: Pulled the heads WTF pics*

This is what my friends at the Ford dealership say about the pics:

Your noise that goes away when it get warm… was most likely(95% sure)… cause by this piston.. GM must have built you motor little loose at least in the piston.
I ask few techs, and was told those marks were caused by piston slap (which I kinda thought)… then I explained your noise and they said yup that piston would cause that.…. I would say your lifters are ok and the piston was the cause of the noise.
We can hone the piston out and it we keep it within specs…. we may not have to get over sized rings. This all can be done in the truck.
Sorry dude, but at least we found out that noise you had….
