Rear Window Squeak Fix

Thx Dave,

Its been awhile since I have done a fullout update, and I dont really have time to right now, so i just spread it out more.
Broke it up into sections so stuff is easier to find.

E is right, jsut replacing the weatherstripping tightens the whole back winodw significantly.
Others have seen worn hinges or latches create the noise.
New hinge pins and adjusting the latch a little would be #2 after the new weatherstripping.

Hope this helps,

rear window noise fix

rear window noise fix

I wrap black electrical tape around the u shaped latching bracket and mine stops rattling for as long as it takes to cut through the tape with frequent openning and closing of the window. It last me 6 months with the last fix.

Don't wrap more than 2 or 3 revolutions of tape around the bracket or else it won't latch. Allot neater than using vasiline. Once it cuts through and starts rattling again take an x-acto knife and cut off the old tape and rewrap it. Your done for months of noise free driving.

I replied to another window squeak post, but not this one yet. I applied a liberal amount of vaseline like supersports10 suggested and it got a lot squeakier for a few hours, but then the vaseline started to work it's way in to the weatherstripping and the squeak is totally gone now unless I torque the body on an insanely pitched road (my driveway for instance). It gives a small groan when I do that.

thats actually not good at all. it used to be a "trick" to stop sunroofs from leaking, everyone would use petroleum jelly on the weatherstripping gasket, untill a few years down the road when it would leak worse and then they realized petroleum jelly weakens and breaks down rubber products.

That's a few years down the road though... :p

Next time it starts squeaking, I guess I won't use a petroleum jelly product then. I'll try the electrical tape method instead.

I had excellent luck removing my weatherstripping, and scrubbing the living shit out of it. Castrol super clean, stiff bristled brush, and I scrubbed the SOB clean, and hit it with a light coat of protectant. I havent heard a bit of noise since......

3M makes a paste silicone. You brush it on and let it soak for a few hours. It flows out and you wipe down with a clean rag. Great for all the window and door gaskets. Part #08946 in a 8 oz can with a brush in the cap. No petroleum so it doesn't break down the rubber. Excellent for bringing old dry gaskets back to life.

You can also buy spray white lithium grease. I know Dave is looking for a permanent fix - so parts might be the right solution.

I'm cheap - a can costs $3 - I've used it twice since the '04 Nats...Spray it where the lil U-bolt goes and you're good to go for 3-4 months depending on how much you drive.

My rattle and squeak came back, so I adjusted the window latch all the way forward and it is snug enough now that it doesn't creak and squeak any more. Try that first.

Finally found my squeak today. The two strikers for the rear gate were shot. One had no plastic left on the pin, the other had about 60% gone. Gate would move a little when driving making the window latch wiggle. No free play now and no noise. Credit goes to a friend who noticed the broken plastic on the one pin.

I think that is the problem with Ty I mentioned above, Danny put a towel to wedge his tailgate and it is squeak free (the hinges while loose didn't do anything for the squeaks.)
