Replace Charcoal Canister ?

Hey Guys,

I have everything apart, including my Charcoal canister out. Does anybody see any point to replacing this canister after 100 K Miles ? Only place I see that sells them is the LMC S-10/S-15 Catalog 4 ~ $60.

I see 3 ports - the Tank, Purge and Air Cleaner ports. When I blow thru the tank port, it is free, so I guess no problem there. It seems to come out the "Air cleaner" port, which has a hood on it and goes to the Air. I guess a vacuum is pulled on the Purge port, and when I suck on that, there does seem to be some resistance.

From all I know, I guess the canister takes the gas tank fumes and passes them thru charcoal before sucking them into the Intake. So, if there were a little plugging in the canister, all it would do is pressure up the gas tank a little bit. Which would not seem to be a problem unless it pressures up the Gas tank too much. Taken to t6he extreme, I guess it could start to bulge out the Gas tank ?

I just removed mine. But it's up to you. Sometimes I smell gass fumes but I'll live with it.

Jesse,

If U left the gas tank vent line where it was, and unhooked it from the canister, the tank will be venting gasoline vapors into the engine compartment. Not a wise thing, these vapors could light off.

I really don't think U R gaining anything by disconnecting it, and U R adding some danger. I'm not sure there is any safe place to vent the tank.

Mine is gone also. Didn't add performance, but did add valuable engine compartment real estate.

Old cars were just vented outside of tank.

Even if you old canister is plugged, it won't affect anything, as the tank will just pressurize until the gas cap lets it off.

I haven't blown myself up yet with my gas vapors in engine compartment. I am more worried about an electric pump and 12V that is plumbed into my gas tank, than a faint vapor, in a compartment with heavy airflow.

IMO, keep the canister. It should be fine as long as you do not overfill your gas tank and allow liquid into the canister. If you have liquid in there, it can cause a rich condition.

This is an emissions thing and should be kept unless you need the space or have a race truck. No benefits by removing it.
