Replacement spkrs for rear of a Sy??

myclone

Donating Member
Im not into the stereo stuff in a big way as Id much rather listen to the music that comes out the exhaust... BUT... on rare occassion I like to listen to my tunage and the factory rear spkrs in myclone suck ass (understatement)..

I like infinity stuff as Ive used it before and they sound fine to me. Is there a drop in replacement made by infinity or any other brand thats better than the factory stuff? Not interested in cutting up the cab to mount spkrs and with my herman munster stature putting spkrs/boxes behind the seat(s) is outta the question (adds weight too).

Any of you stereo gurus got any suggestions??

TIA

Typhoon too?

Typhoon too?

Who makes 6x9's that are totally badass too?
I mean WICKED, oh and fit too... :D
And 4x10's in the front that are the baddest ass ones that fit.

Crutchfield has some $250 6x9's but I'm no audiophile either...

Don't want to cut up stock locations and crap, just bolt in.

i just put in fosgate 4x6 in front and 6x9 in back go to circuit city and get the correct harnesses so all you have to do is wire those to the speakers and plug right in to the truck

a lot of speakers come in that size 6x9 and 4x6 and as for the price im not sure about that but as far as sound if you (myclone)wanted really good sound go for an MB quartz speaker (4x10) also for the in dash speakerks without cutting the ac duct i believe i have had pioneeer and clarion "component" speakers which sound awesome....actually off of my reciept i paid:175 for each 350 total for ultimate sound front and rear installed! If you'd fit a 6x9 in the rear I'd just go with a 61/2" woofer in the back ( +/- same cutting as 6x9 and the treble from a 2,3, or 4 way 6x9 won't be heard for shit from behind the seats). Just checked that site and here's the lowdown:
2 types 4x10- freq. response lows between 38- 40 hz
multiple types $99 6x9s- lows of 28hz available
$199 6x9 thumps out 25hz
61/2 sub woofer for $139 gets as low as 35hz.

Pick whatever of these fits your need(6x9s and 61/2" sub req. install costs) and mate them to the nicest 4x6 plate speakers you can aford, using your ear to decide, not the higest priced one. They need higher power just like the 6x9s and 6.5s so a 50wX4 amp will have you rocking out. I run a similar setup with fosgate plates and 4x10s and a 4 channel 200W Kenwood amp with a Siny ES model filp face LCD cd player. Rocks my ass of, didn't lose any space, had the amp already, but can't thump hard(don't want to anyway), but get load and sounds good. Seeing those stats I'll go to 6x9s when/if 4x10s go out.

What are the BEST ones that FIT though.

What are the BEST ones that FIT though.

What are the BEST ones that FIT though?

Has anyone done a comparision of 4x10 and 6x9 out there?
Any interest in me doing a page on a shootout between them?
I know some people say they suck, no hacking alternatives are cool too.
I just want plug and play and not to hack my truck up.

Any one else shopping currently?
We could do a GP on 'em if everyone contributes what BEST might be.

Sound reasonable?
Interest level?

Will, I think that you'd have to set up too many parameters to do what you are looking for. Some speakers sound good with additional amplification, some are ok off the deck, some sound good in an enclosure, some don't. It would also depend on what kind of music you like and what your reference of comparision is. Speakers are one of those things that will be different to everybody and the only way to really know is to hear them all side by side. Once it come close, you sonic memory isn't but a few seconds. That's why the a-b comparision is so important when buying a sound system or just speakers especially. I think a starting point would to know what fits first off then go listen to them but the quality if a 2 or 3-way speaker won't come close to a nice pair of seperates or plate speakers. That's the way I'd go if I had a good amp.

I guess what would be nice is a canned solution, and I'm willing to put it together, unless I am alone on the idea of wanting something that is "best for what I am asking".

Basically something like "Hello Will, since you don't know shit about stereo's and are lazy, Here's a setup that is relatively affordable, doesn't suck, and fits in stock location. This webpage has the results of my research and everything you need: A din and a half head unit with respectable internal amplification, mp3 and yadda yadda feature and low thd and these stock fitting speakers have excellent frequency response, good db and are relatively inexpensive."

Good basic powerful head unit and 4 speakers.
No cutting.
Not as good as an amp, separates, crossovers, single din headunit, etc...
But I don't have high end stereo expectations.

Basically, Sy/Ty like stereo performance.
Relatively cheap, hauls nuts with a few mods...
:)

If anyone else cares, I will do the work, build a database of head units that fit well. (I have found more than just the standard ones everone sees.) Speakers that are not totally retarted for being headunit powered and a sub that fits somewhere convenient.

Stereo recipe if you will.

I agree on the see what fits first issue.
We do have a surface mount depth problem in the back and the same in the front from what I have heard.

I just want to be able to listen to music, all kinds, without it sucking too bad.
There are a couple crutchfield models that fit.
Has anybody compared these?
Should I?

Where's the "50lb ultimate/pte52 series" setup of stereos?

Like Hartman said it is all personal preference. Some like big boomy bass - some like it tight ;) Some like really crisp highs - some don't.

With the rear speakers you are going to loose a lot of the sound being that they reside directly behind the seats. I wouldn't be REAL concerned about a silk-domed poly-carbonite titanium tweeter for the rears - again this is MY perception. I prefer to have a better sound coming from the front speakers. Think about when you go to a concert - most of the good stuff is in front of you not behind you. This is quite difficult having a 4x6 in the stock location. Doesn't mean you can't find a speaker that will sound good to go there. I like Boston Accoustics - had great luck with them. I am not a fan of 4x10 speakers. I haven't looked into installing 6x9's in a Syclone before - dunno what all is involved. The only ones I remember making 4x10's were Kenwood and Pioneer - neither of which I would call a great speaker. It might be easier to put a 5x7 in the stock rear location and will offer a decent compromise between a 6x9 and a 4x10 and there are a lot more choices. I guess the one thing I would stress is buying the same brand of speaker for front and rear - this will give you the most balanced sound. The best front replacement is to mount speakers in the kick panels or doors. It will allow you to run a larger speaker in the front and also mount separates - (tweeter & woofer is two seperate speakers).

Headunit again - whatever you want. Myclone might be better off having an 8-track player where those of us in areas with technology would rather have a CD player with MP3 capabilities, XM Radio or whatever else you can think of. Some want pre-amp outputs - others are happy with deck power. Anything will fit - with the exception of a Double DIN.

To say what is best will cause a HUGE debate. There isn't a one size fits all approach to car stereos. www.crutchfield.com probably has the best buyers guide as far as what to look for - it might get a little deep for some. Wattage is what most people use as far as what is best. There are different ways those numbers are achieved. As far as side by side comparisons - those can be different too. An ear is generally attracted to a crisper high note as being 'cleaner'. Some places will run one stereo with the EQ (or bass and treble controls) set flat - and have another with the bass & treble set to the max. It is going to make the second one seam clearer and louder - thus more appealing. And chances are it is going to be the more expensive. Listen to different combinations and see what fits your needs the best.

us sy guys dont have much of a choice, but 4x10's are the worst shape for any speaker. You can get a decent sound out of them, but nothing matching a around speaker.

I have a set of the pioneer's 3 ways (dont know if they sell the 3 speaker version any more), and they are conciderably better then stock. However, I dont think they are audiophile quality at all. You'd have to build some customs out of 4 inch speakers and tweeters, and find some room for a mid range speaker.

A set of 6"boston accoustic vega's w/ tweeters sounded better/louder in my doors on my nissan pickup then the front plates/rear 4x10's in the sy.

OK why not do this if you want good sound and do not want to chop up the truck. You can get the pieces to go in the kick panels and put speakers in there and use them as the rear speakers. That is how they are on the 95 and newer s-10's from the factory. Well, almost the rear speakers in those are in the door. Well, I would like to hear feed back on this.

<snip>

I would agree if I was really concerned about the quality...
I'm not *super* concerned.

I am not an audiophile, I could care less about "warmth", depth and blah blah blah.
I mean I don't want "rockford cracomaticgate" either, but a trusted brand matched to a good deck would be nice.

If the factory sizes are SUCH a piece of shit that they are better off left in a junk pile, should never have been made and are shot on sight, then what about plates for round speakers.

Is it just the non-round shapes that are our main limitation?
Plates with separates then.

Location too?
Pods then.

I just want to address the basic limitations of the stock stuff, as simply, cheaply and effectively as possible.

I guess I will just do a poll on interest level, and if I am the only one that just wants a decent, simple and cheap stereo solution then I will just do it myself.

I am just trying to do some common good for the communitiy, document a good way to deal with our stereo limitations (maybe even recipes!), and I feel like I am being convinced why it can't (or shouldn't) happen.

Do you guys feel like everybody is very particular about the whole stereo thing?

I think personally, people could benefit from a "lessons learned" or "recipe's" like the buick guys use on stereo setups that work well.

I'm sure many would think it a waste of time better spent on "Performance" things.
But my truck runs fine right now, and I have short and long term plans performance-wise, and thought it would be good for the group...

Ummm... bite me on the 8 track thing Dave.. :D :p

Im not what youd call an audiophile myself. I like my tunes LOUD at times but not on a reg basis. Dont go for the "thump" in an auto (thats what the house system is for) so big bass isnt really what Im after.

I like just about all kinds of tunage from 80s hair bands to Tupac to Metallica (sellouts) to a LITTLE country.

The stock stuff is garbage IMO. Not much better than what you could get from a flea market/jc whitney.

Anyway, since cutting the truck to fit stereo stuff is a no-no for me Id need a built in amp din and half deck thats decent (I dont need a lot of bells/whistles), spkrs that would drop in the rear spots and thats it IMO. I already have front spkrs just aint put em in yet.

Kick panel spkers wouldnt really work for me. Its enough of a PIA for me to navigate my size 13 feet around there withOUT spkrs in the way. Besides, I KNOW Id have em looking like ass from bouncing my feet off of em getting in and out if I did put em in. Least thats MO.

Okay,

Here's what I'd do.

For the fronts - kick panels (maybe Q-Logic - heard they are cheesy but they are a bolt on buy off the shelf solution). You can try to have them custom made but they are more expensive. I had a stereo shop quote me $400 for kick panels for my Ty - $200 for Q-Logic. Q-Logic will hold most 5 1/4" speakers and tweeters. The component speakers (seperate woofer & tweeter) come with their own crossover so you don't have to worry about smoking your tweeters with low frequencies. Completely disconnect the 4x6's. Run the front signal to the kick panels. Decent components will run you between $150-250.

For the fronts - look to see if it is possible to mount a round speaker there. You will probably have to go with a 5 1/4" there as well. I wouldn't order components - just a standard 5 1/4 - but do a test fit to see if it will fit before you buy. I don't know what the spacing is like there. You could probably make a plate to mount it on. Since you are going with a larger speaker in the front you could probably keep the 4x10's. Again, your choices are limited to Kenwood and Pioneer. It isn't going to need to add much to the system - just a little extra depth.

So, if it were me......this is all stuff from Crutchfield without cutting and glueing on a budget.

With Kick Panels:
Q-logic kick panels - $200
Kenwood KFC-P503 - $149 - 5 1/4" with tweeters
Kenwood KFC-415C - $99 - 4x10

Without Kick Panels:
Kenwood KFC-X468C - $99 - 4x6
Kenwood KFC-415C - $99 - 4x10

Now, if you are cutting - your choices open up a lot.

With Kick Panels:

Q-logic kick panels - $200
Infinity Reference 505cs - $179 - 5 1/4" with tweeters
Infinity Reference 6952i - $119 - 6x9 OR
Infinity Reference 652i - $99 6 1/2" Round OR
Infinity Reference 552i - $89 5 1/4" Round

Without:

Infinity Kappa 462.5cfp - $149 - 4x6
Infinity Kappa 692.5i - $199 - 6x9 OR
Infinity Kappa 62.5i - $149 - 6 1/2 OR
Infinity Kappa 52.5i - $149 - 5 1/4 OR

Your choices really open up if you are going to do a little more work. There might be other places that make a 4x10 for the rear. I used the ones I did so I could stick with the same brand all around. I have found it tends to give the best balance. Listen to different speakers if you can. I just used stuff from Crutchfield and going on past experiences.

With the 4x6 - you have sound reflecting off the glass - it is okay but not the best solution. You don't point your home stereo speakers directly at the ceiling do ya?

I could explain the path length differences between dash mount and door mount speakers - but that could go on for awhile. Briefly - with a dash mount speaker the distance from the driver's side speaker is considerably longer than the passenger side speaker. Adding kick panels the distance is longer - however the ratio from driver's side to passenger's side is closer so the sounds will reach your left ear and right ear at closer to the same time. So not only will kick panels allow you to mount a larger, better designed speaker in the front it will also give better "imaging".

I agree, and it sounds like we might be after the same thing.
I have a list of cool decks that are din and a half!!
One does DVD, MP3, CD (no tuner though) that is only 299 bucks!
And have some other cool din and a half things...

I though I would poll for interest level, but you own this thread...
Let me know if you want to combine wonder twin powers on this.

Yes, stock is crap. They use the cheapest possible stuff. Anything from Best Buy or Circuit City or whatever you have nearby will be better.

Other than a few pebbles in the shoe, any brand will fit. I got the Cerwin Vega 4x6 plates from Best Buy, and the magnets are pretty big. They hit the air ducts, and the ECM bracket on the passenger side. They fit great, except they push the grilles upwards a bit. So long as you get a 4x6 speaker that isn't insanely deep or something, it'll fit in the dash.

Same with a head unit. They're a standard size, which of course GM doesn't use. You can get the "GM-sized" ones which are directly plug 'n' play, or you can get a standard DIN unit and a mounting kit.

They make wire adapters for the deck and speakers, both directions (factory speaker/deck to bare wire, or factory wiring to bare wire for new speaker/deck). GM uses two different sizes of antenna connector. You guessed it, there's an adapter for that too.

In short, you can go in and buy anything marked in the right size, and drop it in with a $10 adapter. Which one you buy is really personal taste. Go listen to some and see which sounds best on whatever you listen too. If the $20 one sounds better than the $500 one, get the $20 one.

If you could upgrade one thing, I'd say the speakers should be first. Factory paper cones don't hold up well, and aren't anything great even brand new. The speakers are what actually produce the sound, and I've always seen a huge improvement just from new speakers. A new deck on the stock speakers will most likely sound just as crappy...

I don't even have the rears hooked up in mine. As was said before, it just detracts from the soundstage, and makes it sound like the singer is warping diagonally back and forth in your truck. Except for some of the new fancy stuff, car stereos are still two-channel sound for some reason. It's not like surround sound, where the back speakers play the "behind" sounds. They play the exact same stuff as the front speakers, which can make things sound weird. And it's not like the back speakers in a Sy are going to give you a lot more bass or fill in some huge sound void or something...
