Running rich.

I haven't had the Ty long and haven't drove it alot. It was a nice day today and decided to drive it to work. Had the windows down and top back. It was "burn your eyes out rich". What would cause it to run rich? I know I have a vacuum leak at the heater control. I'm waiting on that part to arrive. Would this be related?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Running rich.

Could be several things. Bad o2 sensor, stuck injector, incorrect voltage at map sensor. Are you getting any error codes?

Re: Running rich.

Do you have a catalytic converter? Do you different injectors? or fuel pressure regulator and what is the FP set to?

Re: Running rich.

Thanks. No codes given and cat has been deleted. As far as I know it is all stock. I added a K&N cone filter and thats about it.

Re: Running rich.

Looking at the vac lines looks like a previous owner has done some work here. They seemed to be all messed up. The fpr line had come off so it had no vac at all and that was allowing a vac leak for the map sensor. I've had a leak at the heater line so I've plugged that one till the new part arrives. It is running ALOT better now. It still smells a little rich though but not as bad and it is boosting much better.

broken coolant temp sensor.

unhook the sensor next to the elbow front of engine. if it runs better without its broke.

It should look like this....

I really would go ahead and buy a vacuum line kit I linked earlier. It should be the first thing you buy for your syty!

Re: Running rich.

The large hose coming from the front of the plenum at the bottom, where does it go? Mine is plugged with a big bolt by the po. Thanks.

Re: Running rich.

It should goto the vacuum line that has heater, vacuum ball, EGR, and cruise control.

Re: Running rich.

I'm even more sure that you're fuel issues are vacuum related. Buy a vacuum kit, properly replace all of the lines check valves and fittings, also change your oil (I bet you're dumping fuel into the oil). I would also replace the O2 sensor and give it a full tune up using good parts (cap & rotor with brass terminals). Do NOT boost launch or run your truck WOT until you have done those things first. Report back with your results.

Thanks. Sounds like a good plan. I have been driving it to work but no boost launches or WOT's. I hate cleaning up after a shadetree muck up...

Re: Running rich.

did you try the temp switch?

I unhooked it expecting a ses light. Didn't get a light and didnt seem to change anything at idle. I haven't ran it unhooked though. The motor seems to be up to temp. heater is hot and radiator hoses are hot but temp guage doesn't come up too high. Where should it be at proper operating temp? It would run rich if the engine isn't hot enough or the temp sensor doesn't read correct temp right?

It just gave me this code. It hasn't thrown codes yet but I just saw this one this morning. I'd say this is my "rich" problem.
