S-10 rear end for syclone

I am sure someone has put in the 8 3/4 s-10 rear end in a sy or ty. What year s-10 did you get it from? Do they come with disc brakes? How hard was the swap. I called Moser axle and they get around $2200.00 for a 12 bolt rear w/alxes, thats a little more than I want to spend. I know my stock stuff won't hold up to the engine pte is building for my sy.

Mike,

Didnt know GM made a 8 3/4 rear.. Bout the heaviest 10 bolt I know of is the 8.5 that was in the turbo buick cars/hurst olds/442/Impy SS.. It was stuck in a few other cars too but is hard to find/rare. The above cars is what I know for sure had it from the factory.

None of the above is a "bolt in" either. Lotsa fabrication required to make em work.

S-10s (as far as I know) only came with the 7.5 and 7 5/8 inch rear.

On the other hand Im the only one I know of thats ever busted a SyTy rear and that was from a defect not HP in my situation.

Never thought of the "new" body style s-10.. I have never messed with them so they never crossed my mind. Sorry bout that...

Can you/anyone confirm that the SS uses the 8.5 10 bolt??? If so, then that would be a "bolt in" (for the most part). That rear has taken some GNs into the low 10s or poss 9s in the 1/4mi so its pretty damn tuff.

I guess I will throw a bone out for someone to bite on

My thoughts are what is gonna break a rear end, with the exception to myclone who manages to find the biggest pothole in all of Missouri, is sudden shock. Something that would be seen from a high stall convertor or a neutral drop (but that is generally the clutch producing funny smells) the the ring and pinion is actually forced together. Most of the times with ours the gear is already meshed (boosted launch) so a sudden shock isn't going to be seen. I am not really speaking from experience just kinda throwing out random thoughts that someone may either agree with or give some good information.

Im with you on the "preloaded" thinking Dave.. Only real failure Ive seen in drag racing with even the small 10 bolt is with slicks, 383SB, and a 5spd. The pinion was, literaly, pushed out the front of the center section. Seen lotsa spider gears scatter in 4x4 stuff but that was from getting "air" with the right foot still matted when the truck came back to mother earth.

Just a case of WAY too much shock/TQ for the rear to handle at the track. It did last a few passes before it scattered. I was thinking it would scatter on the first pass.

My fault, it is the 8.5 I was referring to. Hot Rod or Car Craft, did a article on parts you would need to put a V-8 in a S-10 and they made mention that the 8.5 rear end came in some of the late model S trucks, but they didn't say what years. I think they said the truck had to have the H.O. 4.3 in it.

I am running a th400 trans and a trans brake, the truck is still AWD. I plan on putting some slicks on and I don't want to worry about the rear end.
Yea, I know everyones going to say the transfer case will let go, but my friend works at Borg Warner and he hooked me up with a "special" case. I hope it works.
The motor sould put out about 700hp at the rear wheels, with the air cond. on.
Any more info on the 8.5 rear in the S trucks would help.

Thanks,
