Setting Timing w Car off

Hey Guys,

Trying to get the timing close. Amazingly the GD GM Shop manual doesn't mention the IGN. timing spec, or if it's in there, it's really buried. JC, that oughta be on the 1st page ! Then Chilton says it's on a label under the hood and I don't see any F'ing label.

So anyway, what is the spec ? I presume it is the same for an MSD. Is there any way to get it close w the engine off ? I found I can fit one of those shortie Gear Wrenches in there from the drivers side, but then the IM is off. Dunno if I can do it w the IM installed.

I had to turn the Oil P shaft to get the rotor lead where #1 should be. The shaft was kinda loose - should it be loose ?

Michael and guys,

Sorry 4 all the jargon and shortcuts, but I spend way too much time on these lists and should spend more time on my cars.

Anyway, U did real good, Michael, except IM meant Intake Manifold. I try to minimize my keystrokes since I can't type more than 3 words w/o F'ing up.

IM.....missed that one. Dangit!

Anywho....to help answer your question, Lynn, the stock timing spec is 0 deg BTDC. That is with the engine in EST bypass (brown timing connector unhooked) and the engine running. As far as getting it close with the engine off......obviously, get it to TDC on the intake stroke at plug #1. have the oil pump shaft aiming in that vicinity and drop the dist in. Remember that the rotor will be pointing more at plug 3 or 5 when it starts to go in, but will rotate clockwise when the dist gear meets the cam. This will bring it over to #1 and drop it into the oil pump shaft groove. If it doesn't drop in to the shaft groove, either bump the starter or pull the dist and move the groove and try again. The timing is the same with the MSD, btw.

Oh yeah, the OP shaft will have a little slop to it, so I wouldn't worry.

Thanx again, Michael. Glad to hear it's 0 Deg, because I'm thinking I can just put one of those little feet (there R 6 of them that rotate) at the closest point to that stationary magnetic thingy.
