Should I buy a Typhoon for a daily driver?

I am thinking about buying a Typhoon as a daily driver. I do not know a lot about these vehicles and I am not a huge GM fan, but I have always been fond of these trucks. I want a nice SUV and am looking at one of these or a 4Runner. I don't want to mod it much at all, because I have my Supra for that. I just want something reliable. The main bad thing I have heard about these is they have transmission problems. Just curious if someone could shed the light on me. Thanks.

If you looking for something reliable, buy a 4runner...

as a rue that has already made that mistake..... i wouldnt recommend it. sy/ty's require a lot of time and patients. if i had it to do over, id get a supra for a daily driver. haveing two cars does help tho. i have a sy and a ty, and i seem to be able to keep one of them running reasonably well at all times. its just a lot of work.

do a search on reliable....

you'll come up with a few postings on this subject...

in short, if you take care of the truck and are mechanically inclined and can keep on top of maintenance, yes, it can be reliable.

if you dont read up on typical problems, and dont care for the truck, then its better left that you should shy away from these trucks...

but like any sports car/truck, your going to drive it hard at some point. stuff will break sooner or later....

nice supra, btw

I am from Omaha Nebraska. Thanks for the compliments on the car. E-Rue, Renz told me about us having the same last name. Rue is not a very common name. I have your aol name, so I will send you an IM sometime. Thanks for the info guys.

I had my Ty for a daily driver, before it was stolen. It only left me stranded a couple times due to starter issues, but it does require regular maintenance, and if you're not willing to perform that maintenance, then it's not a good idea for a daily driver. I didn't mind myself, so it worked out fine for me.

Umm as in we all need to be DOCTORS to afford to maintain them or what ?

Seems that way as of late.. Too bad I dont have the DR's income to support my truck.

Think ya mean PATIENCE !

In either event, I bought my truck with 104,000 miles on it. Drove the piss out of it regularly and even managed a 13.7 with nothing more than a PITBULL memcal. It always ran strong and never really had a BIG issue with it. Could drive it anywhere at anytime. The biggest problem it HAD at the time I got it was tires that were worn out, and wheels that were out of round/bent (chronic for OEM SyTy wheels). But from what everyone else says it sounds like I musta had the BASTARD truck since I never really experienced any reliability issues. With that said, the time I started experiencing issues with it and reliability was ONCE I started to tweak on it. I installed different heads and a bigger turbo trying to cheat a rebuild (ok atleast DELAY it), and it caught up with me. I think for the most part as long as they are stock its prolly an OK daily driver, yeah its NOT HONDA reliable, but then again, its not 'zactly a HONDA either..

I'd prolly suggest AGAINST one overall as a daily driver coz they aint getting any newer, even the LOWER mileage trucks are 10 years old now so stuff is GOING to break.

They are very good for daily drivers if you get the starter problem fixed. A real fix, not just replacing the starter.

The rest of it depends on what the previous owner drove it as. If it was a stoplight warrior and used to tow trailers with his other cars on it, walk away. THAT truck is NOT gonna be a good daily driver. Stolen recovery, walk away. Salvage, forget it.

Take someone with you that knows what to look for. Torn stickers on ecms, missing front driveshafts, leaking rear axel seals, clanging from engines, slipping transmissions, clunk on acceleration after deceleration(bad engine mounts, u-joints, or rear end worn out). Stuff like that.

You have to do regular maintenance(oil changes, trans fluid and tranfer case fluid, tuneups, and change belts and hoses as our engine compartments are very hot due to the turbo and really makes these parts brittle over time).

You'll find what you are looking for if your patient.

my Ty is my daily. personally i love working on it, so doing the maintenance is fun for me. and never say, "Hardly Mod" it. that usually means your going to mod the hell out of it once your supra is at a point where your stuck.

id say get one as a daily, but make sure you can do your own work. otherwise just owing it will cost more than a 4runner, or even a normal S-truck.

and about the transmission, its not just the SyTys its all S-trucks. generally, stock GM transmissions suck. but the nicer you drive it, the longer it lasts. they also have 3rd party warranties for sale. i plan on getting one in a month or so.
