Re: SoGT L35 Intake Tuning Valve

what's a L35?

I just posted this in another thread where an owner is experiencing less power than he had previously. I'll start a thread, so it comes up easier in a search.

Here's another thing that never comes up, because not too many guys have stock GTs and leave them that way:

The L35 has an intake tuning valve. It is under the center plastic cover that says 'vortec' on it, in the upper intake. It opens between about 1,500 RPM and 4,500 RPM, depending on throttle position. It changes the plenum volume, and influences torque.

I have (2) L35 engines. I have had trouble with this valve, or the relay that controls it, on both of them. When it isn't working properly, the engine is kinda doggy.

Best way to check it is:

Turn the key on.
Short ALDL pin A&B, just like your pulling the codes. You should hear a distinct 'clunk' from under the hood. The clunk is the valve opening.
If no clunk, check the relay next to the FP relay next to the booster.
Remove the connector from the relay.
Turn key to ignition.Jumper pnk/blk to purple. Valve should clunk.
If no, remove valve from intake manifold. Test valve with aux power source.

Check it. Very few people or techs know about this little power-robber, if it isn't working correctly.
