starting issue! little help?

Well I got the truck all back together with boat loads of new parts. I fired it up and it idled and ran beautifully. I am getting it ready to be tuned due to new throttle body and larger turbo. I jacked the truck up and change the Trans cross member out to the sweet one I bought from JSM. Thanks by the way Jeff!! So I lower the truck and want to take it for a little spin. Turn the key and it just doesn't want to start! WTF. Try again and give it a little gas and it starts but not well. Smoke and stuff (due to fuel I guess) won't hold an idle. I have to feather the gas. After a minute I can remove my foot and it idles perfectly. I changed the intake air temp sensor back to a known good one and no change. All the vac lines are new, plugs, cap, rotor, wires are new. MAP sensor new, throttle body new, engine temp sensor new, coolant sensor new. My fuel pressure gaug reads 43psi at key on. I am leaning towards the IAC motor. Any other ideas? I am getting pretty frustrated. thanks

Any possibility the fuel lines got pinched while you changed out the crossmember? Just a thought since it was running fine before.

Good thought! I will check. They are hard lines in that area I believe.
I will let you know what I find.

Re: starting issue! little help?

well I can't seem to see any issue with the fuel line around the cross member where it sit up
on top of the frame rail. I would think a kinked line would have trouble making fuel pressure upon keying the ignition anyway. It was worth a look. I am still stumped. I am going to look into the IAC. The only time it acted like this in the past was when The battery voltage was below 11.5. The Big Stuff wasn't happy with this voltage. I will try a different battery also. Fingers crossed.

Based on what i read,, sounds like cold start and warm up table related. Once it is up to operating temp I assune it is ok?

Re: starting issue! little help?

I agree Alex to a point. The truck ran and started fine earlier this spring
And I haven't made any changes to the table at all. As you know I am too afraid
To mess around in there.lol. I will be trying the new battery in an hour or so. We will
See if that is the issue. Other than that I can only think of the IAC.
Well up to temp not really. I need to give it fuel for about a minute the she
Idles nice. One thing I will also try Is to shut it down after it idles for a while and try
A restart to see what happens.thanks for the input.

Re: starting issue! little help?

Okay ruled out the battery. I had 13.5 volts. I then tried to start the truck. I had the same
hard start with all the smoke. I let the truck warm up then shut it down and immediately
tried to restart it. it started beautifully and idled fine. ???? I don't know. I will try to replace the IAC and see what happens. The smoke concerns me a liitle. It must be loading up on fuel and needs some air? If the IAC doesn't help I say screw it. I need to get it tuned anyway so I will get a trailer and drag it off to Alex. Then it will be his issue. LOL.
If you can't fix it yourself throw money at it is what I say!

Re: starting issue! little help?

Okay little more checking today. I was thinking maybe the battery was week and that when keyed on the voltage would drop below the 12 volts that big stuff needs. This was not an issue. The voltage holds steady at 13.0. So I turned the key off and heard a sound that I don't remember hearing before. It sounds like a small electric motor turning for a second or so. I can't get from the key to the engine fast enough to pin point it. I am pretty sure it is the IAC motor. Is this common? I might need to get the wife involved(which she hates) to turn the key on and off to pin point the sound. We will see. The replacement IAC motor is $122.00 at NAPA. It is not going to break the bank but if it doesn't need to be swapped I don't want to throw money away.

IAC motor will adjust itself during key on. Might be what youre hearing. Is it still a syty TB? I would try cracking the throttle on a cold start and see if it still starts hard and smokes.

Re: starting issue! little help?

I replaced the throttle body when I redid the lower Intake manifold and turbo upgrade this winter. The sound I hear is when turning off the ignition. It is a Summitt 52mm throttlebody witch I remounted the stock IAC setup. I will try to start it under partial throttle. Just to see.
Thanks for the input.

Re: starting issue! little help?

Tried partial throttle during start up and it was the same hard start with
Smoke. Since I last posted I checked the coolant level, replaced the intake
Air sensor(on the upper intake),tried to start it with the throttle partially
Open. No luck as of this afternoon . I am going to replace the IAC motor,
Coolant temp sensor and the engine temp sensor. For lack of any other ideas.
I will also switch out the MAP sensor. We'll see?

Re: starting issue! little help?

There's a way to reset the iac....If you haven't tried that I'd give that a whirl....I can't remember how to exactly but I think it's foot on the gas press down 1\8th of the way start the truck up...let the rpms flare up and then immediately shut the truck off....correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's how it's done....I'll await davep's response...

When you replaced the throttle body did you reset the throttle blade to about the same place? I think you're going to find you just need to adjust some of the startup tables in the BS3. No need to throw parts at it.

Remember that he has a bigstuff3. .that iac reset doesn't work.

You have a cold start/warmup tuning issue. Call me Monday and let's see what I can do remotely.
