Stock Crank Limits

Aeroking

e.i.
I just picked up a used stock shortblock. I'm going to be reusing the block, mains, and crank.

At what point should i think about cryo treating, or any other crank treatment.

Or is the stock crankshaft stout enough to support a mild build.

Re: Stock Crank Limits

I would say stock crank is good for under 400hp. You should cyro for peace of mind, only like a buck 50 more.

stock cranks have gone 10s fairly reliably.

I would think about upgrading to 4 bolt mains before thinking about crank treatments.

i didnt say untreated. i would go cryo'd and splayed billet caps.

there have been a few crank failures, of course. however, i am not sure that there is any emperical evidence that can prove all of them (or even the majority of them) are strictly crank failures and not as the result of something else failing - ie main cap failure.

Re: Stock Crank Limits

my crank is stock and i am over 400 hp for a long while now. no issues. i like the extra money in my pocket as well. (stock crank = free vs. $2000+ for steel). peace of mind is in the eye of the beholder.

Re: Stock Crank Limits

I have run several 11.8 sec passes on my stock crank (4-bolt mains). and have had no issues thus far.

i agree get the 4 bolts ,and just dont detonate the motor u be fine

There is the key.

But if you have to put a HP # on it, i would say 625ish mark.

Is the 625 hp with an untreated stock crank?

Re: Stock Crank Limits

I'm at this cross road myself from what i've seen a built block with ported vortec heads runs about 9k and to go with a aftermarket crank would double the price. Would a cryo'd built 4 bolt long block be able to handle all a pt67dbb pump+meth could throw at it?

Re: Stock Crank Limits

Like cloneman & Jeff said. The key is in tuning and not to rattle the engine. You can scatter anything (including a steel crank) with enough detonation.

And keep the rpm limit to the 5500-5700 rpm zone.

Its all realative. If you run it everyday at 25psi and making 600hp at the wheels it will break its just a matter of how long you get out of it.

If you run it at 15psi most of the time and turn it up once in a blue moon it will last for years.

I would cryotreat it period its cheap insurance.

Re: Stock Crank Limits

Order one from scat,. They have new cast cranks for @ $300. Higher tensile than stock. Thats cheap. When I called they had quite a few that were 10 under that they were unloading pretty cheap.
