stock head work?

how much of an increase can you expect from porting and polishing the stock heads with 1.6 roller rockers? Is it worth it?

heads

heads

Sure it will help some, but the way I have read the consensus on the list is that if U R going to bother pulling off the heads, get rid of them and upgrade to better heads. Like the Vortechs - the 94-96 bolt up, and the '96 + require Mods, and that is what I have done.

I guess the stockers basically suck.

i think the general feeling is that that are just detonation prone no matter what you do cause of horrible combustion chambers, not much porting and polishing can do about that.

L35's are easy bolt on but still have an inefficient chamber as well compared to others, you will see some gain but nothing to knock your socks off.

my personal goal is to wait for the vortec conversion on my truck. the chamber is a gazillion(that's a lot) times better than either of the previous 2 which should let you lean a lot harder on them before detonation is much of a concern. Which is my overall goal, not a all out race truck but a truck you can beat on pretty good and not be so concerned with KR like all of us are now.

just my 2 cents of course.

can the l35 combustion chamber be worked on to be less detonation prone? i dont fully understand what makes a combustion chamber more prone than the other...is it totally obvious just by looking at the two side by side? i'm thinking about doing the vortec conversion as well...but i would like to further understand why it helps so much...my ported L35's, flow just as good or better than stock vortecs by looking at the flow sheet that came with them....

Go vortecs or you will be sorry in the long run, they justify the money you spend. Hell i went 4MPH faster with 5lbs less boost after my motor build. You can find them for around $100-200, then spend $350-400 for welding and $50-75 for drilling. You wouldnt even have to spend money for port work now if money is that big of problem, the money saved on not proting them out goes in to the money to have it welded. The L35's would need to be worked on just to get to the vortecs stage stock anyway.

Go Vortec, its the only way

i'm convinced...going vortec's on the sy...they dont seem to expensive...i don't want to detonate the hell out of my new engine...i guess the l35's can go in my mainly stock ty...ty needs a head gasket anyway...

thanks guys,

depending on what you have to pay to get your stockers done you may spend as much money and never get close to what you would on a set of vortecs.

same deal on the l35. you'll end up spending as much on them to get them to work than what you would just upgrading to vortecs that with very little work will blow the l35's away

vortecs are around 300 bucks for a new set. expect to spend about 500 bucks more to fill, drill, and weld up the intake with no port work. my highly worked l35 from flow technologies cost over 1500 bucks years ago to get them to flow less than 240. stock vortecs come out of the box with almost that and with minor work will produce substantially more.

l'm always amazed when this question comes up because i know that after buying the l35's people will still end up some day going with vortecs. the ONLY advantage l35 have is they bolt straight up. i've had em all. in every form. go with the vortecs

so i should go with brand new vortec heads? Then get all the work done to those or a different year?

Sometimes you can find a good deal on new ones otherwise watch out for a good deal on a used set.
A new set is nice but if you are going to be changing valve springs and getting a multi-angle valve job the new set may not be worth that much more.

I think Mike Lee had a decent deal recently on a set.

So basically we want to look for 96- vortech heads? Where is a good place to look? Junkyards? I am interested in finding a set. How much should I expect to pay? Does anyone know anybody who could do the welding/porting in the Detroit area?

Thanks for any help,

Ken

Ken,

Look for the part#10235772, known as the 772 casting, 96+ vortecs.

Ask Mike if he still has these in stock, not sure if there the 772's....
