Re: Stock IC pump GPM?

i remember seeing something like 4gpm in a discussion a long time ago. i know they barely keep up and hence the upgrades everybody does. shu-flow, johnson , bosch i.e. ford lightning pump ,and gm pumps for the ss colbalt . i have the johnson pump and it helped quite a bit.

Most people upgrade because the stock pump craps outs. Additional pumping volume doesn't make a difference. The IC system only holds a little over a 1/2 gallon. The so upper and lower reservoirs have ~1/4 gallon of fluid. You just don't need that many gph to move the fluid.

does that pump work pretty good ? i've read sometime back that pump moves water like crazy and have been thinking of trying it out . my johnson pump is better than the stock one and has been reliable for several years now. but i'm kinda of disappointed at the output . my ic gets heat soaked after long drives and after a few blasts . and takes too long to recover .

It's not the pump that causes the heat soak. The lack of fluid in the system and the tiny heat exchanger is the culprit.

I tried the Harbor Freight pump once upon a time (still have it in my tool box) and it I think it actually moves too much water, plus it is freaking loud as hell.

When I was looking for a suitable replacement I was buying the Atwood aerator pumps from Walmart and they would work great for about a year, then the coolant mix would eat the steel impeller shaft.

I went to Cabellas one day and they had a yellow aerator pump from Johnson for $18 that had a stainless steel impeller shaft. It fits the stock location with a few minor modifications and has been running like a champ for over 5 years now.

That's my recommendation.

Edit: Looks like they've gone up in price and changed color, but otherwise this looks just like the one I use: http://www.cabelas.com/product/John...&Ntt=aerator&WTz_l=Header;Search-All+Products. I just put a 90* elbow on the vertical outlet side to alleviate the hose kink issue a lot of people have.
