stock intake limits?

Has anyone found what the limit of the stock upper and lower intake is? Seems a lot of people switch over to the 2114 intake thats been welded up for injectors, but when does that become needed?

Is the stock lower really that restrictive? I'd think that after a good port matching job and a larger throttle body you could make some impressive power with it.

I believe the problem isn't airflow as much as air distribution between cylinders. At higher boost levels, you can have certain cylinders going lean while the others are still OK. A single O2 sensor may not detect that before damage is done.

There was one guy on here that had an engine built by Nolan making over 700 hp on the stock intake. He was running E85 though, so that probably gives more margin to run the overall mixture rich to avoid certain cylinders going lean.

I know it's skewed because of swapping from regular heads to vortec heads, but is there any HP difference between the 2. I.E., one added X HP/Torque over the other with the same turbo, etc.

Re: stock intake limits?

I can see how the stock upper would cause some lean issues in cylinders due to how the throttle is off to one side. Would cause some issues with the back 2 I'd imagine. Something like Mike Renz's intake should fix that tho, I'd think. His seems to center the throttle and has a balanced distribution.

It's exactly 613 horsepower.

612 you're fine.
614 you're ****ed.

I have run nothing but a stock upper and ported lower. It's is my experience the stock block (4 bolt mains or not) will give up before you run into a bottleneck with the intake. I'm sure there is a slight power gain to be made with the converted edelbrock intake. I guess it all comes down to just how much power do you want to make. 700hp to the tire is a low 10 second possible 9 sec truck. That can be reached with the stock intake.

Thank you! This is good info and what I was looking for. Think I'll stick with the stock lower and do a mild port job on it just so it matches up with the vortec heads.

700 to the tire is what I'm hoping for because I want a low 10 second truck when I'm done. If I make it to the high nines that would be amazing, but I'd rather it not blow the bottom out after 3 passes. :rotf:

I need to pick your brain at some point and see if my build is on the right track or not.

I have given up on an air flow distribution plate. At least my observation is the trucks running the converted edlebrock intake seem to run good time for the amount of engine mods.
