Stuck on the freeway.

Hello everyone. Im broke down on the freeway right now. No tools. No AAA tows left because my wife used them up on her VW bus. Ok, Sorry for the rant. I was driving down the freeway at about 80. The truck backfired. ???? I didn't know why, so I pulled to the shoulder. It backfired 2 more times before I could pulled off to the side of the road. When I got to the shoulder it backfired one more time and in the truck shut off. It will not restart. After I opened the hood. I noticed some coolant splash from a ruptured heater hose. What would cause the no start and back fire. Could it have been the module? Or maybe coolant got on something and shorted it out. IDK. Right now Im just trying to figure out how Im going to get this thing off the freeway. Any suggestions would help.

Thank You.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Ok, just got it started. I think my problem is fuel pump. I disconnected the relay on the driver side firewall. I cranked the engine over. It tried to start. I reinstalled the relay. And was able to start the truck and drive it off of the freeway to a gas station where it died again.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Yes sounds like a fuel pump when Mine was going it would run for like 10 mins then slowly die. Glad you got it off the Freeway.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

The coolant could of shorted some ign wires causing a misfire/crossfire hence the backfire. Mine quit once on the fwy. It wold idle but that's all. Turned out to be the MAP sensor. How many of those have failed... Jez

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Ok. I just got it home. I was able to start it buy disconnecting/re connecting the fuel pump relay so I could Drive it on and off the tow truck. The only place that has a fuel pump in stock right now is AutoZone. And it's a Delphey DHP10001. I usually use a Walbro 255. Has anybody use the Delphey? Or is it not recommended for trucks?

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Are you positive it's the actual fuel pump? Unless you got a Chinese Knockoff they're pretty reliable. Also could be the fuel filter. The little sock that is on the FP inlet or the little hose that bypasses the "pulsater"

No. I'm not 100% on it being the FP. Im at AZ now. Im just going to buy everything that I think I will need because I know that If I only buy one thing and need another, I might not be able to make it back here before they close. I am running out of time. This way I can all the parts I need and focus on the truck when I get home.

OK, Thank You.
Right now, I am about knees deep. I thought I was loosing my mind. I had to peace together two hoses to replace the heater hose. It's kind of hokey… But it worked for now. This way I can try and figure out what the hell is wrong with my truck. I have fuel pressure at ing on, running, and ing off . One thing that I did notice was the plastic coil housing was sparking against the intercooler hoses and would cause the truck to die. ??? IDK ??? So I rerouted the intercooler hoses. Then I removed each plug wire and crimped the boot a little tighter so that they locked onto the distributor cap and coils posts. I started the truck. It idles fine. It stayed running in my front yard for about 40 minutes. I did not lose any coolant or fuel pressure. I am reluctant to take it for a drive because it might actually be the fuel pump. That is what happened 4 years ago when the stock FP went out. The truck would pass every test I could think of at the house. But as soon as I drove that son of a bitch. It would die after 15-20 minutes. It was not until I took DavePs advice and taped his fuel pressure gauge to my windshield and went for a drive that I was able to find the problem. So as of right now I'm going to go into house, wash my hands and call it a night. I will see what happens tomorrow. Thank you guys for all your help.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Ok. I took it for a drive today and nothing. It must have been a short. I don't know why the plastic coil cover would have been arcing agenst the rubber intercooler line. The only thing I could think of is the ruptured heater hose got coolant on the coil, and with a loose connection it arced to the closest ground. Causing the truck to mis fire and shut off. But that is just a guess at this piont.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Update: Day 2 of driving back and forth to work. Im noticing a lack of power. Now Im getting an intermittent code 13. I do not think it is the O2 because my wideband is working properly. Im guessing that it is something to do with Coil, Cap, rotor, wires, or plugs. I'm going to pull the plugs when I get home. I will also do a compression check before I buy anything else for this truck. Wish me luck.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Hey jason.
You mentioned experiencing a backfire in your earlier post.
Maybe that Damaged the Map sensor or vacuum checkvalves.

Just a thought. Hope it helps.

Code 13 is an open in the o2 circuit, nothing to do with the wide band. 2 different animals. Also nothing to do with the ign. IF your wide band is patched into the ECM and IF your chip is configured to emulate the stock o2 then they, the WB and a code 13, might be related, otherwise I don't think so.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Well... I ended up working Sat. Then I took the Ty to a car show on Sun. Now its Monday. I started thinking about this intermittent code 13 on the Sy. The check engine light would only turn on at around 60 to 80 miles an hour. So instead of doing a compression check I decided to just change the cap and rotor. I drove it to work tonight and everything was good. No more check engine light. My only guess at this point is that the code 13 and engine dying where 2 separate incidences. I believe the back fire was caused by the coil arcing against the coolant line taking away spark from the spark plug and killing the FP at 80mph. The code 13 was just a bad cap and rotor. The cap was pretty burnt, so I think it just was not getting enough spark to the plugs. And causing the O2 sensor to throw a code. IDK. I could be full of shit. But it's working now. Thank you guys for all your help.

Re: Stuck on the freeway.

Added Info about setup.

I am using a single WB O2 with a plx dm6 module to the ecu. The WB gage worked properly the entire time. With an A/F around 14.7
