Syclone Boost Problem

Ok so I'm having an issue where when I accelerate at around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, the truck pulls OK, but not as much as I feel it should, but when I accelerate full throttle, it just falls flat on its face. Like I feel like I'm not getting any boost. I do have a boost controller and a Blow off valve. I have the BOV set pretty hard currently and I've turned the boost all the way down too because of the boost pressure hitting 20+, and it still gets up there sometimes acording to the pillar boost gauge. I am new to Syclones and typhoons so I don't know how there supposed to feel and I'm just trying to get this running perfect and tuned before I do anything else. I just got it less than a week ago. Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

I'm kinda new to the ty and Sy.. but I'm going to guess ,that people are going to ask if you have some sort of scan master ...they would want know what the readings are..

Do y o u know what has been done to it? Stock chip, injectors, fuel pump, etc.? 20lb is high unless you are running the appropriate fuel. Check for boost leaks, timing settings, fuel pump voltages and fuel pressures. These trucks eat up ignition parts. Datamaster is a great tool to consider as well.

I agree on some sort of scan tool. Could be a lot of things, but sounds like knock retard. I use tunerpro and a hand held. Tunerpro is probably the cheapest way.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

Whats your Fuel pressure at ? try disconnecting your boost solenoid should be about 8psi. thinking your overboosting and no providing enough fuel. Could also have a bad injector.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

I don't have a scan tool for the truck yet since I just got it. So today I tested the truck and drove it ( with the boost turned all the way down and the BOV fully hardened). I get good boost at half throttle until the boost maxes out. Then I get the Pshhhhhh sound and lose all boost. If I keep holding the throttle it just keep Pshhhhhhhhhhhh ing until I let off completely, then re apply. If I go full throttle, it just spikes to over 20 pounds then "pshhhhhhh" until I let off. so I figured the BOV might be faulty or something. I removed it and blocked it off, and retested. Full throttle, spiked to 20 psi, and Pshhhhhhhhhhh, truck died. Scared me alot, but i checked under the hood. Everything looked fine except a vacuum hose disconnected going from the boost controller to the manifold. Truck started right up and I just parked it, and to the Internet before I blow it up lol. Sorry for all the Pshhhhhhhhhhh ing but it goes Pshhhhhhhhhhhh alot lol
So as far as what has been done to the truck, I looked at the receipts and at 90k miles the engine was rebuilt, along with a 49129-4100 Mitsubishi Turbocharger, Victor MS16154 Intake, CAM (Intake @ CAM 271 @ Valve 407, Exhaust @ CAM 286 @ Valve 429, Rocker Arm ratio 1.50) GReddy BOV, and many other misc parts. The truck now has 140k miles on it

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

I don't think the boost controller is working. I don't use anything but a forge wastegate, but If your controller was working it wouldn't let boost build that much. A direct vacuum line from the turbo to factory wastegate should not be over 10, I think it is like 8psi. I would check the wategate and see if it is stuck. A BOV for our trucks isn't really necessary, I think I would remove it for now until I figured out the boost problem.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

Ok then ill bypass the boost controller first and see if it starts to over boost, if that doesn't work then I'll test the waste gate with about 8-10 pounds. Also when the engine is at idle, i get a reading of about -10 boost pressure. When i rev the engine in park and hold it, the pressure goes up to about zero, then starts to drop back down even though I haven't let off.
A few other issues worth mentioning is that the truck runs somewhat rough at idle. When I look at the RPM needle it's shaking around a little bit at idle. The truck also makes a ticking noise that sounds like a sewing machine at idle, which I read was the fuel injectors, which is an easy fix. So tomorrow ill start testing fuel pressure, change plugs since i have new ones, order a timing light, etc.
The truck also reallyy needs to be aligned since it pulls to the right when driving, so I need to deal with that, and when I turn a little sharp the wheels skip alot from the posi as if it's a straight axle. Ive always wanted one of these trucks and got extremely lucky and found this one on CL, and traded one of my dirt bikes for it lol. So it needs a little work. But the interior and the paint on the truck is actually in really good shape, plus the rebuild and 10k in receipts I got with it. Also I just installed new axles in the front that I got with it. Sorry for the long post, just thought I'd mention the other couple issues to be worked out lol

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

These are not the smoothest idling trucks. You'll find after hanging here for awhile that ticking injs are common and probably normal. Don't change them just for that. The dancing tach is kinda normal, depends on how much I guess. Plugs of course, Maybe wires if they're old. Cap and rotor while you're at it. Get the boost fixed, sounds like it should run pretty good.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

Your vacuum seems low to me. I run about 19 inches at idle. I would maybe check for vacuum leaks also. I know a cam can change it so I guess I am not sure what yours should run. Like was stated the injectors do tick and being batch fire they fire at once so you really hear them.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

Ok so I removed and bypassed the boost controller, checked the vacuum lines and found that the hoses connecting to the manifold were really old and shitty. So I replaced them, and went to start the truck. No start. Forgot it was out of fuel.. -_- . Got fuel, and she started right up! :D . Took her for a spin, and it was running 100x better. No falling on its face anymore. Only thing is that I can only get up to about 8 or 9 psi. I feel much better mow though that's it's running better. I'm think I'll put the boost controller back on and try it because I'm pretty sure the problem was the hoses. But we'll see

If he is looking at the stock gauge, it will look like -10 psi, but it is about 20" of hg.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

The fuel pump in these truck starve for fuel when because of the design of the fuel tank. Don't launch the truck with much less than a half of tank. I would not WOT unless you had a 1/3 of tank of gas or more.

Fix all I'll vacuum lines of one is damaged most of them are probably not far behind. You don't want to lose an engine over a few dollars of vacuum hose.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

The other day when I was test driving it, my brother in the passenger seat noticed the tach spike to 6k rpm! That's definitely not good for the engine! Anyone else ever had this happen? I was paying more attention to the boost gauge when this happened, and it happened right when the waste gate was dumping boost pressure, with my foot on the gas.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

Did it happen to be on the 2-3 shift? I was playing with the governor weights and managed to get mine to do it. The RPM's spiked several hundred rpms during the shift. It seems to be a known issue with 700R4 called "flare", and it only happens between 2nd and 3rd, and usually only at full throttle. The TransGo shift kit is supposed to cure it, but I haven't had time to put mine in yet.
Of course, your problem may be something different.

Re: Syclone Boost Problem

I still recommend getting some data logging equipment. Tunerpro is free to use with an option to buy, and get a cable $60-80 might able to find them cheaper. Things happen fast and it is nice to be able to record a run and look back at all the parameters and pinpoint where things happen. It will save a lot of guess work.
