Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Like the title says. I was having an issue where my Ty would only make 11 or 12 psi. I noticed that the BOV didnt sound right. I checked everything intake tubing, replace MAP,test boost solenoid, test boost controller, all the vac lines and check valves, inspect the intercooler for cracks.Nothing problem still exist. I am sitting and fuming over it and decide that i need to inspect the turbo for excessive play and such. I took off the air filter and vac line to the PCV valve. when I removed the air filter the intake pipe fell off at the intake manifold! WTF. I know that it was tight. Upon further inspection the clamp was stripped and the bottom of the silicone connector was loose. it passed the wiggle test because the air filter had wedged it in place. The bottom of the connector is toast. I looks like it was folded under the clamp some how.:oops: New clamps and connector is on the way. This is just like me. I over think everything and over look the obvious. Lesson learned. The hard way.:lol::lol:

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Well maybe I didn't over think it! Wtf. I still have an issue with a lack of boost
I can get to around 10 psi. I do here the air getting past somewhere as soon as Ingo from vac to boost. I checked all vac lines, silicone couplers from turbo to intake and all the other things I can think of. Could a bad vac check valve be the problem? Seems like the turbo would be able to make boost over that. I am out of ideas. Any input would be great!
I am pulling my hair out. Just a quick note. New vac lines from Sportmachines. Making 15 pounds of vac at idle(seems a little low). Thanks in advance

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Have you tried carefully boosting with the wastegate undone to see if it will make the desired boost or at least more than 10lbs?

Check over your intake/intercooler piping very very carefully. Maybe start by securing the tubing from intercooler to throttle body to keep it from blowing off. Check every coupler, top and bottom...seen and unseen areas. You're losing boost somewhere. Start with the basics. Make sure its mechanically ok first.

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

when you say "new hose kit" did you have the problem before you put the hose kit on or was it right after install? Or did this problem just pop up out of the blue?

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Replaced them part of maintenance really couldn't say when it popped up due to
Not being able to pedal it too hard after engine rebuild. I was worried about the tune and it is
Hard to find anyone who is familiar with Bigstuff 3. I will recheck all the intake piping again.
I need to find this leak so I can finally get the tuning taken care of.
Alex (quabinkiller) is going to help me tune it. He is a great guy. Very helpful.
Thank for the replies.

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Do you have some type of blockage through your intake system, I take it you have an a/a intercooler? Did you do the smoke test to see where (if) there is an intake leak under boost? Could you have a check valve reversed (doubtful)? How do you know it won't make more than 11/12 psi boost, do you have a manual boost guage?

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

I have a electronic boost controller and a boost gauge on my pillar.
Yes I have an air to air (rpm) . I have not done a smoke test. I will search that
In the archives I guess. I did test the controller with a compressor and it works correctly.
Waste gate opens and closes with compressed air also. I will try anything
At this point. Thanks

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Boost control solenoid, got oil in it had same symptom. un plug vacume hose to solenoid, or wastegate, slowly go into boost and accelerate harder untill reading of at least 15psi. dont spike boost and damage engine. The vacume line to boost gauge would also cause vacume and boost appear low with vacume leak in line.

Re: Talk about over thinking a problem!!

Update! I found a big leak in the intake piping. It wasn't any of the silicone couplingsor the throttle body. It was at the blow off valve. I have a Tial 44mm valve with a v band clamp
When I removed it I found the O ring was pinched and part of it was cut.
3/4 of the O ring was seated right but the remainding 1/4 was inside the flange allowing tons of boost out. I found this by making a 2" fitting and cap with a pneumatic hose adapter on it to pressurize the pipe and listening for leaks (thanks for the idea Mike). After replacing the O ring no leaks in the intake piping from turbo to throttle body . Tomorrow I will test drive it and post the outcome. Thanks for everyone's input. Fingers crossed!
