TDC, how to find??

Ok , i put my intake and every thing on the truck and tried to get it to fire up tonight. When it was turning over, it would start to fire up, then get really ruff and die. So i am thinking i must have gotten my TDC wrong (mabey 180* off) and need to restab my distributor. (it did not ever stay running for more than a 1/2 sec) So i dont think turning the dist. would have solved it.

Tell me if i am doing this right or wrong.

I bumped the motor over, (with spark plug #1 out of the whole) when i felt air being pushed out of the plug whole i would then go to the timming mark coming up and put it on 0*. i then stabbed my Dist. in with the rotor pointing to the #1 on the cap.

Now does this sould like a good way to set this all up or is there a better way to get it going. (this is how the shop told me to do it)

need any info u can give.

The way you have described it should be enough to get you in the ball park and get it running, this is how I did mine anyway.

If you timing is 180 out.. it will not run.. .ask me how I know?

It does however make quite a fire show out of the exhaust.

I think the way you are talking about is fine. You need to put a timing light on it and just move it and try to set the timing.. if you are in the ball park and have it running you should be ok. Provided you are not using an old worn out balancer that has shifted.

Yep sounds good. Like he said a balancer spun would ruin your day. I'd do a TDC check now. You could also be one tooth off.
Use a old cap (syty owners should have at least one freshly thrown in the trach right? ) and drill a hole right where the #1 terminal was. Then you will be sure that the rotor is over #1 at TDC.

I say again verification of TDC is important.
