Re: th400 vs 4l80e Give me some info

But the 700r4 only has 22 miles on it and was built to go. And has all the good parts I jut know it won't survie 600 or 700 hp and make a 10sec passes

If it was truly built well it will definitely survive 600-700hp and make 10sec passes. My Rossler built 700 has been making 10 sec passes for almost six years now without an issue. The question is how long will it last, the 400/4L80E are definitely stronger but the myths about 700 transmissions not being able to handle bigger HP just aren't true (obviously to a point).

Another thing to consider about the 400 is your goal for trap speed in the 1/4 mile. You can make it but typically that means playing around with different gear sets and having a higher revving engine. I can't make it through the 1/4 without OD with a 6k RPM redline. The Hoover's ran a 400, I seem to recall a conversation with Jim at one point where he said they were hitting their 7k RPM rev limiter before the end of the track. If you're only planning on running it in the 1/8 mile no problem.

Good luck, consider everything carefully before jumping in.

Mark,
thanks for the info. Any idea what rossler charged for a built 700r4? Have u had any issues with it? What kind of converter on u running?

if anyone is worried about trap speed, change the gear ratios. from 3.42 to 3.23 or lower would net a better trap and keep you in each gear that much longer. Or buy a taller tire

That's a good idea, with I think one major flaw. I've never seen any 3.23 gearsets available for the 7.25" IFS front diff (and I've done some looking).

HOWEVER, If you've seen 'em, please provide a link. I'd rather run 3.23's in my truck than 3.08's (too low) or 3.42's (too high).

Approx. $3500. Zero issues since it was installed in the fall of 2003. Running a billet TCS 3200 torque converter.

That's the problem.... nothing in between 3.42 and 3.08 that I have ever heard about for the front diff.

3500 isn't that bad at all. Did rossler tell u what it was rated to? I'm sure as long as u keep it out of overdrive it will live. I believe the ls1 sy that was in gm hi tech had a 700r4 case with 4l60e internals inside. I know even at that the 700r4 case is the weakness. Anyone know if there is truth to that?

Rossler did not say what HP it would handle. I'm guessing most good builders don't like making HP claims understanding many variables are at play when stating that number. This one has everything they offered for the 700. I generally keep it in D when getting on it and only use OD when required. For regular driving I leave it in OD and shifts are very smooth and polite. Put some pedal behind it, though, and it shifts very firm.
