Tires ????? with background.

Hey Guys, I have the goodyear 245/50-16 on the Syclone right now, but need to start thinking about tires. So I have a few ???? about them.

1.What tires are the best for keeping the cab Quiet on the freeway?

2.What tires are the best for wear & tear?

3.What tires are the best for braking?

4.What tires are the best for traction?

5.What tires are the best for reliablity?

6.What tires are the best for dependablity?

I'm looking at the size of 255\50-16 as well. The Goodyears I have now rate in this order.On a scale of 1 to 10 #1=3, #2=4, #3=5, #4=6, #5=4, #6=2.

I realize there are subtle differences but do you really need separate categories for wear and tear, reliability, and dependability? Ok, maybe wear and tear, but what the hell is the difference between reliability and dependability

I had Firestone SZ50EPs before. They stuck like glue. Much better than the Dunlops that were on the truck when I bought it. Unfortunately, they're quite expensive. When those wore out (lots of highway miles) I was low on cash, so I got dirt-cheap Kumho 711's. I haven't driven on them a whole lot, but they've been pretty good. I've never found myself thinking that I need better tires in my daily driving, that is...

I'm with Bill. In addition, The SZ50EP's were quiet, had decent treadwear (340?), and the tread pattern looked cool too. I looked for new ones recently though and couldn't find them anywhere, tirerack.com... even Firestone.com(bridgestone.com) either, wtf? Anywho, I ended up with zr1 repro wheels wrapped in Dunlops from ebay.

Hmmm... SZ50EP at Tirerack. But they're listed as closeout. I still saw them on the wall at the local Firestone place a month or two ago (yay lifetime alignment). Wonder if they're replacing it with something...

My only real gripe with them is the price, which really isn't horrible compared to other performance tires. They are also narrower than other tires of the same size. You might want to go up to 255s to make up for it.

I listed reliability and dependability separate do to the fact that some tires will score high in the reliability dept, but in reality the dependability is not there. A example of this is my own experience with Michelin tires 4 sets over 16 years, on 3 different cars & 1 van, the following happen- on two sets the tread just came off at 80 mph on the freeway with the family with me at night with less than 10% wear on them. The other two times the tires weather check really bad after 1 year. Now mind you these tires usually get really good ratings all the way around. Now you know the why they are separated....

In fact, the 255's are what I ran. But couldn't find new ones... It sucks they're phasing them out.

one more vote for the sz50ep... I always used them before.. what a difference from other high performance tires. wish they had them in my current size (245/40/18)

Thank You to all who replied, I order the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP from my local Firestone Dealer, It turns out that the Firestone dealer's will match the Tire Rack Price & I save on shipping.

wow... the local firestone dealer would never match tire rack here. last time I tried the sz50 was like 130 at tire rack and the firestone dealer said their cost was over $190

Well, here the lastest news, when I went down to pick them up was told that they are no longer around, the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP & they wanted to sell me something else. I talk to other tire maker on line & by phone, They all said we don't make a tire for that truck or recommend a tire for that truck, But one BFGoodrich said that the new Traction T/A H/V is a tire that would be a very good tire to use & even recommended it. Has any one tried this one???

F-bodies use the same size tires, and generally go for performance stuff. Tell them it's a Camaro or Firebird if they need something to look up. I actually had to wait for my SZ50EP's to come in because some lady with a Camaro had just bought the last ones before I came in.

I run the Michelin Pilot Sport 255/40 17.
They are not cheap tires, but I believe you get what you pay for in many cases.
These things are very sticky and this model came on the Viper stock. Obviously mine are smaller, but they are no joke street tires.

Helps when you can get them from the distributor out of his garage. :tup:
