I brought my into Saskatchewan, and that means I had to have a safety inspection done. First it failed because no daytime run lights (hotwired them off ign. switch and will remove), exhaust leak (had to cut half the exhaust off to weld a 2" gap in a joint on top of the pipe), and the thrust angle on the rear axle is .42 degrees (Sask Government Insurance or SGI allows max thrust angle of .15 degrees). So I fixed the lights and the exhaust, pulled off the U-bolts to check that alignment pin in the center of the leaf springs and wiggle the axle around just because I couldn't think of anything else to do. Took the Ty back to High Energy (local shop that does SGI inspections) and they did another alignment and found the thrust angle was still too far out. The shop couldn't tell me what was wrong or how to fix it, only that they guessed the axle housing was bent! Wanted me to remove the rear axle and take it 200kms to Regina and get it straightened.
I just about did a backflip.
It drives straight, no vibration, no tire wear, no dog-tracking, no teeth getting spit out from the ring and pinion. My mechanic buddies couldn't figure out why High Energy wouldn't pass the Ty. We thought about swapping in the axle off my 89 S-10 but the Ty axle is 3 1/2 inches wider, thought about getting the Ty safetied at another shop but I didn't want to drop another $200 when I already paid to have it done, thought about cutting and re-welding the spring shackles but that would be pretty tricky. After a few frustrating days I took a little time off work to phone SGI, and after an hour on the phone (mostly on hold) I talked to the manager of SGI's inspection division and told him my story. He was cool and wasn't worried about less than a half degree thrust angle. I had High Energy phone SGI and got that one last checkmark I was waiting for put on my inspection sheet. It's nice to be on the road again.
