I know that there are five bolts for the bellhousing, My question is does the stud go on the bottom or top on the passenger side?

The stud goes up top and the trans fill tube attaches to it.

There are two studded bolts. They go on the RH, lower-most positions. They hold the down pipe bracket.

The dip stick is held in with a regular 3/8 bolt at the RH, top (1:00 position). The TV cable is supposed to route under the dipstick bracket.

I concur

Yep. The metal clip that holds the wiring harness goes up there too. Lotsa "fun" trying to get the trans fill tube and clip on there. I have always gotten to it from the top but I have small arms... The stud that the downpipe bracket attaches to is the topmost one on the passenger side. If you are keeping the 700-R4, cutting a notch where the sheet metal comes together behind the stud for the socket will make it easier to remove in the future:

"If you have ever pulled your own transmission before, you know what's up with this. Primed and painted afterwards..."

I have a modified socket that I use to get the stud out on trucks that don't have the notch:

"Modified 14 MM deep well socket to get top most downpipe stud off. Cut down with a cut off wheel and then faced in a lathe to approximately 1 3/4 inch in length. Unmodified socket above."

Two studs with bolts? What? I thought there were 5 bolts and one stud for the dp at the 10:00 position standing at the front of the truck. Are the 2 studs at 10:00 and at 8: and what bolts to each of them?

The wiring clip bolt goes in the inner, lower most hole on the rear of the pass cyl head. Page 6D7-4 of Helms manual.

There is a clip that goes under the 'dip stick tube bracket' bolt. But it is for the T-case vent hose. Page 7D-4 of Helms manual.

It's been awhile since I saw a Sy or Ty with either of these brackets. But the wiring should not be down on the trans bolt. This will place it too close to the firewall, and it could get damaged from abrasion when the truck is returned to service.

Yep, I recall that there was two brackets that you had to thread the bellhousing bolt through and that it was a PITA. I just checked and it IS the dipstick tube and vent tube for the transfer case . I guess that's what happens when you have Transmission built by George Blake that has lasted for more than four years with no problems . Anywho, that particular bellhousing bolt doesn't have a flange head on it because the brackets act as a washer for it...

I looked around for a down-pipe bracket in my stuff. I was going to post a pic. But can't find one. If you still have a stock DP, there is a tab welded on it with a hole that lines up with nothing, if this bracket is missing. There is a triangle-shaped bracket that goes on the aforementioned studs at 8 & 10 o'clock, and has a hole that lines up with the tab. Page 6F-5, Fig #4, view "A" in the Helms manual.

If you do not have this bracket, it is impossible to get the DP tab to go "on the stud".

Regards,
Dave

Sounds like you know what's up but here it is anyways:

I guess the person that welded the bracket on my downpipe didn't think that leaving the wire on was a big deal ...

What is the bolt thread and pitch size for the tc inspection cover. And I don't mean T40. I want to replace them with regular hex bolts.

I live in the panhandle of Fl and the sugar white beach sand plays hell with anything that it gets in, so I am going to need the cover. However thanks for the comment about the bolts instead of studs and the dp mount. I really didn't think I needed it secured to the tranny.

don't you guys think that mounting the DP to the bellhousing is causing some of your false knock?

i have heard people say it could be the converter. but i'd imagine that DP could cause some serious false knock.

just an idea, but why not just put an exhaust strap right after the DP comes down and under the truck? right as it starts to go parellel to the floor pan?

Absolutely. I removed that bracket shortly after I got my Ty. I ran it for several years and ~30k miles before I sold it and never had an issue.
