Tuning HELP!!!

Hi guys, Finally got the truck running and it pulls strong and smooth. But I want to start fine tuning the truck. I know it falls off hard at higher mph. Around 70 it falls on its face so I am thinking that the tuning will help that. What tuning software is up to date or what would you guys suggest I use to tune the truck?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

I think you are going to have to provide more details. What is done to the truck? Are you currently running a stock chip? Willing to go to code59? Who did the current tune?

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

So the truck has a built motor, forged rods and pistons, port matched Vortec heads, 10-1 compression, stock turbo making about 18 lbs, Turbo Tweak Chip, 42 lb injectors, 3 bar map, Alky Control Kit, a PLX wide band, and a Scan Master 3. The chip is programmed by Eric from Turbo Tweak, the fuel pressure and other things are done by me. Less of a tune and more of a drive ability tune.
That is the current build. Hoping to pull a high 12 1/4 mile time out of it at 5,000 feet of elevation.
I have downloaded Tuner Pro and started playing with it a little not changing anything on the truck yet. But I need to play with the fuel because with the Alky the truck is running very rich and falls off really bad after about 65 mph.

You will probably get responses from members that tune with turbo tweak. If not maybe contact Eric and ask for a little help with your tune.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

I'd suggest that you start running E85 instead(but that means new injectors and fuel pump plus chip to match) . You have high compression to begin with. Or, start running with around 10 psi boost or slightly less, then turn up a bit at a time and see what it needs to stay running strong. It might help to keep your AFR target under boost at around 11.5-11.8 because any leaner could get you another rebuild.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

What does the air/fuel ratio look like throughout the run?

Do you have the PLX connected to the ECM?

Definitely get Tunerpro going so you can datalog.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

The afr idles around 14 which is where I have found that it idles very smooth. Now that I think about it the plx might not be connected to the ecm, but I don't know why I would hae installed it without connecting it to the ecm. I'll have to check. The truck when I slowly roll onto the throttle and the truck makes boost the afr drops right to 10 then through out the run just stays pinned at 10. It does this with the alky only set to 3 out of 9. So I was thinking bring the fuel down and give it more alky and get the afr to around 10.8-11.2 in wot. What do you guys think?

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

Start turning down the WOT fuel dial on the chip until it leans out. You'll want the alcohol to eventually be up around 5 or 6. If it's still rich in the 0-10psi boost area, then use the mid-boost fuel adjustment in the chip parameters to lean it out. I agree on the target AFR of around 10.8 as a good starting point, then go from there.

It's helpful to have the wideband hooked up because the chip can do closed loop correction at WOT just like an aftermarket computer, which makes tuning go a little faster.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

Most AFR gauge only read past 10.0:1. So you AFR is at least 10.0:1 and likely richer. Leaning the fuel down 10.8-11.2 will make a huge difference from where you are now. [When I added alky, my Syclone, my AFR were reading as well.] The stock turbo is going to be a limiting factor, but it should run better than it is currently with the mods you have,

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

Thanks for all the quick responses guys. So I checked the PLX and it is not connected to the ecm. I was gonna leave it like that until I get more of a handle on tuning the truck. Right now the Fuel Pressure is right at 38 psi. Is that fine or should I change that?

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

Is the scanner showing any knock? It could be pulling spark out causing it to fall on its face and run rich.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

Eric says in one of his post the chip will work in closed loop at WOT. And it will make tuning faster. That should help you with your tuning. Once you get your WB connected to the ecu/chip.

I am sorry I am unable to help you with your tuning with the Turbo Tweak chip. I have been following along trying to learn a little about that chip.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

So I have been playing with tuner pro and data logging what I can of the truck. I haven't had it to the track yet to data log that. But before I run it at the track I am going to hook up the PLX to the ecm and put the truck into closed loop. Is that all I need to do for that? Just hook it up and make sure its in closed loop? I mean to get that part moving. I know there is other
tuning stuff I will have to do. Just sounds so easy and nothing has been easy with this truck.

Next the whole knock thing........ So I pulled the codes off the truck it is showing 43 (Knock sensor circuit) and code 41 (Cam shaft sensor?) those are the only codes it is throwing right now. I am not sure what to do with code 41. Do our trucks even have a cam shaft sensor? That might be a stupid question. The knock sensor is always showing 1.9 if the engine is running. Doesn't matter if its making 0 psi of boost or 20.

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

The Velosyty chip can detect if the wrong memcal is installed (or no memcal), and it shows up as code 41.
Do you have a stock-type memcal installed on the Velosyty memcal adapter?

For wideband closed loop, connect the wideband, make sure it's working (make sure the AFR on the scantool matches your PLX gauge), then you can turn on closed loop WOT by setting a target AFR in the chip parameter 7. I typically start around 10.8 (which will be 108 on the scantool).

Eric

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

So the I had the original ECM go out on me about 6 months ago. So it has a replacement ECM and then just the TurboTweak chip and then everything else is stock on the truck. Do I need a different adapter for the Turbo Tweak chip?

I will connect the PLX to the ecm after work today and start tuning with the scan master.
10.8-11.2 is what I've heard to shoot for.

Thanks for all the help so far guys!!!

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

You need a stock memcal. Do not do any WOT tuning, because you have no knock retard in the current condition.

What are the numbers on your stock memcal that is plugged into the chip?

Re: Tuning HELP!!!

So I went to connect the PLX to the ecm. But I need special connectors, I don't need them I just don't want to jury rig it to the ecm and stuff. So does anyone know where I can order some GM ECM pins? I looked at a few places but I couldn't quite find the right connector. I went through some of the S10 forums but then they started talking about how it matters what ECM it is. I don't know if they were right or wrong but before I order the wrong pins I wanted to ask the SyTy masters. Plus the ones I found looked like the wrong pins.

Thanks guys
