Turbo replacement option

Brand new Typhoon owner here :)
Right now I'm trying to read all I can and ingest the info on this board. Want to be comfortable with everything before I begin to do any major mods. Right now I'm starting to inspect the car and see what needs to be fixed, what parts are beyond that moment.

After I do all that I want to give it a bit more power.

At this moment I got A/R 60 m24 turbo installed in the car. It's very small, at least for my taste - no lag at all... well almost no. Hard to say when it's starting to bite since I don't have tach gauge ( Saudi Dash ), but it's very early on RPM range.

It's set for 12 psi on normal map, and around 18 with additional methanol injection on racing map.

So in the near future, when I get all the things done with suspension, tranny etc, I would like to replace it for something that can give get the car into 450-470HP.
It's still going to be mainly street car for fun, so it has to be practical.

I am planning to put 4L80 into the car before the turbo upgrade.

But what to do when it comes to turbo ? I have no idea.

What do you guys thing about this one.

Why am I asking abut this particular one ? Well - because I have it lying in the box with parts for sale from my previous car. It gave me around 450HP in the last car - the thing is that it was in Nissan 200SX on 2 liter engine.

We have 4.3 in Typhoon so It's totally different. I'm not good with turbos and the calculations behind it I'm afraid. That's why I need your help to slowly create a parts list and budget for each step of my project.

Thanks in advance

Use that turbo! It won't let you down. It brings a tear to my eye seeing someone else using a Garrett turbo.

Re: Turbo replacement option

I see that you don't like precision turbos :)

Main question is that is this particular turbo up to task to have close to 500HP.

Trying to get basic knowledge of turbos, its getting slowly but I did some very basic calculations. Correct me if I did it wrong.

4.2 liter is 256 ci

That gives ideal theoretical CFM of :

- 282 @ 3800 RPM
- 444 @ 6000 RPM

I've read that general loss is around 15% so it gives

- 239 @ 3800
- 378 @ 6000

having 2 boost levels ( 12 PSI and 24 PSI ) I have calculated Pressure ratio compared to atmospheric pressure, then took around 75% efficiency with inter-cooled engine that gave me Density Ratio of :

- 1.34 @ 12 PSI
- 1.94 @ 24 PSI

That gave me CFM values under boost andLBS/MIN of air mass flow

12 PSI

- 321 @ 3800 RPM = 22 lbs/min
- 466 @ 6000 RPM = 35 lbs/min

24 PSI

- 508 @ 3800 RPM = 32 lbs/min
- 736 @ 6000 RPM = 50 lbs/min

I've read somewhere that 10 lbs/min of air = around 100hp , so in order for me to get a tad shy of 500hp I would have to boost the engine in 24 PSI range, and the 500hp would be at the very top of RPM limit.

As I stated before I am realy bad at turbos. The only contact I had with forced induction was in the bigblock I have that got 8-71 blower ontop - but it puts out around 5PSI so its noting compared to the problems that might occur in this situation.

What turbo will be suited for that idea ? What engine internals I would have to change. Already have 60 lbs injectors, kenne bell bigger throttle body, 3 inch back exhaust + few more goodies that I might not know of since there were a lot of owners of that car before me. I will slowly inspect everything.

Re: Turbo replacement option

That turbo is too small for our engines and your goals. If your looking to use a Garrett turbo, I would use one of the GT35R series options. You will need to be up in the 24psi range to make near 500hp with the stock heads and cam.

Re: Turbo replacement option

Got it. I don't need to use Garrett, just had one lying around that I need to sale. Thought it was to small. What if I would change heads and cam - just don't know who makes aftermarket cams and heads for this V6
