Turbo size Q's......

I came accrost a turbo for sale that a local party has and would like to pick somones brain as to how it would work on the ty.The turbo is a Garrett T3/T4 Hybrid with a 62.1 compressor wheel and a stage 3 turbine wheel. The turbine housing is a .82 A/R and the compressor housing is a .70 A/R. I think it may be a bit big for the stock converter/motor judging by the looks of the 62.1 compressor map. It may not even work at all. I would need an external waste gate, the ex housing has no provisions for an internal. The long block in the truck is stock, all of the esay mods are done to the truck. I am planning on the ultimate chip w stock injectors and an upgraded fuel pump w/adj fuel reg. The converter is stock (til next year). I need a new turbo and this one has a good price on it. Any oppinions are welcome! Thanks...

That turbo is a little bigger than the T3/4 hybrid Im running and I can tell you that mine wouldnt spool with the stock TC. On a cool day (70ish deg) I could get maybe 5psi but on a hot day forget it. I couldnt build any boost. I switched to a 3k stall and got instant spool up with basically the same engine combo you have.

So, IMO youre gonna need a stall converter.

So this one is going to be a hella to big. I was looking at another one with a 57 trim compressor wheel, stage 3 turbine wheel and a .63 a/r turbine housing. Mabyee that will be a little better suited for the stock motor trany combo. What, if I might ask is the compressor/turbine combo that you are using?Thanks...

I dont mind telling but for the life of me I cant find the specs in my notes so I'll hafta go by memory.

Exh side (turbine):

T3
.52 A/R (I think, but it may actually be .56)
2 1/2" outlet

Compressor:

Stage III 60 series (I dunno what "stage III" actually means)
3" inlet
2 1/4 outlet
Cant recall the A/R right off.

Im planning on a upgrade to one of the Garrett GT series turbos so I really havent spent a lot of time researching what all I can do with the one I have now so my memory has gotten foggy on the specs.

Thanks. I think that the 57 trim compressor and stage 3 turbine w/.63 turbine housing may be a good choice. 3" inlet comp side and 2.5" exhaust side. It may be a bit big for the stock converter but I may buy one before next spring..(converter that is)

A few things I learned come to mind.

A friend of mine buys a lot of used parts for his 94 Mustang 5.0 (11.6 @ 119). He warned me about buying parts available in the type of scenario you described, here is how he put it "You keep making compromises because it's convenient and its available now, but pretty soon you end up with everything you never wanted." - Monte on making compromises buying parts to make your car fast."

Next, there was another quote I had from http://www.roadraceengineering.com/marctech/2000_2.htm that went like this. "I ran 11's with a few key things: 1) I worked with Mike & RRE throughout, and I paid attention to what I was being told and did not then go off and do something different just to be different or because my buddy had some other part available for cheap."
Basically they were making the point that you should come up with a plan for your vehicle and STICK WITH IT. Don't change your combo just because someone local has parts available and cheap "almost the same" as what you were planning!! My recommendation based on that is to forget this huge turbo and stick with what you originally planned.

As far as Ultimate with Stock Injectors... I would not use that combo for a turbo bigger than a 20G (unless you have auxiliary fueling like Alcohol injection). Your not thinking ahead!! Buy the 50# injectors now and save your money so you dont have to lose your ass upgrading twice down the road. That's what Monte would tell you anyhow :)
