Turning problems

Sometimes when I turn either direction, I will hear a very loud thumping and it sounds like I have big grippy tires hitting the body. It even will stop and wont move unless I get on the gas sometimes. It's almost like putting on the brakes or something. Stock wheels and tire size.

Re: Turning problems

Also when I turn I hear a sound like air escaping very fast from somewhere. Kind of like when you turn on or off the A/C when the key isn't turned.

Re: Turning problems

The air noise would be low power steering fluid most likely (don't ask how I know that  ) ... as for the clunking, check your CV joints, they're most likely going bad (half shafts generally run about $100 new / $60 rebuilt each, or you could rebuild them yourself but probably not worth the labor)

Or, of course, it could be something fishy in the diff, but I doubt that

Re: Turning problems

Damn, it might be the diff. Today while turning in a parking lot the tires were squeaking/chirping when turning all the way in one direction. Later when in a different lot I turned all the way and while I started to turn straight and accelerate I heard a loud thump.

Re: Turning problems

I suppose the other question is is something funky going on with your propshaft when you're loading it in the turns like that. Of course, if it were the diff it's going to be difficult to diagnose from outside.... they're not so much fun to rebuild either

Re: Turning problems

remove prop shaft and see if things change. I had one act that way and it was an exploded sun gear in x-fer case.

Re: Turning problems

+1 for the T-case, & the viscous coupling going bad. Although come to think of it, I had a similar noise/symptom when my ft. propshaft finally let go. Like someone else suggested, remove ft. shaft & see if it goes away.
