Turns off

I need help:
The Sy turns off in about 1 or 2 minutes
Truck starts and idles normal for about less than a minute and then wants to shut off , it is at this time that you have to give it more gas and after 1 minute or 2 it will shut off. It sounds like it is starving from gas like if there is not enough and it will turn off no matter how much you accelerate. While you are doing this the gas fumes bcome unbearable and it dies off anyway, it will start again but it will do the same thing every time.

Thank-You

Re: Turns off

Thanks for replying Neil
I don't have a catalytic converter but I do have a new ECM, which we had a problem sometime back It would not start, a new ECM was connected and it started immediately but it does not stay on.

Re: Turns off

he needs datamaster, i once flew to the UK. asking if datamaster was ok, and it was a bad temp sensor.

Cheers

Re: Turns off

The Sy was working fine before al of this

It looks like now it has blowby, when it never had anything before

Thanks all of you guys for your input it sure helps having someone that knows what the problem could be so that we know where to start and what to check. Will have someone to check it this weekend and do a leakdown test.

Thanks again for your helphfull tips

Re: Turns off

Disconnect the timing bypass connector and see if it still does it under base timing. That would isolate a bad ignition control module (ECM advanced circuitry), magnetized or cracked stator or wiring issue if it runs good like that. If you have a timing light, you can watch for constant spark (via the flashing light). If it starts to go goofy as the engine starts to act up, then you can chase the ignition system.

Also put a fuel pressure gauge and watch the pressure. Pull the EVAP purge line off if you still have that on it, although that should only get vacuum under part throttle (spark port vacuum if I recall correctly).

Coolant temp will make it run richer, but not enough to shut it down. The only sensors with that kind of authority is the RPM (stator through the ignition control module) and MAP. Check the MAP sensor vacuum lines. You are looking for not only cracks, but something that may plugging the line. Something like a deteriorating rubber line that shrinks under vacuum.

Unless it is serious blowby, that won't cause it to run good for a bit and then die. My 84 civic did just that, and I had to run the breather to a filter under the car (we called her chitty-chitty-bang-bang). Shouldn't happen with a larger engine like your 4.3 though.

After that scan tool data would be of the most help.

Re: Turns off

if the temp sensor has been broken for a while, the plugs will become so black it will become worse and worse. -180 was the readings in DM (as i recall)

Re: Turns off

It has horrible blowby just like my Ty did when the cylinder walls just finally got worn out with 146k. Inspection of my cylinder walls after a low cylinder compression test pointed towards a ring problem. After teardown the cylinder walls were worn so bad they looked polished, you couldnt see one line of crosshatch anywhere the rings traveled. The engine has 120k on it and has been raced for most of it's life prior to us fixing all of the screwed up stuff on the truck. I was able to keep it running no problem with 2k rpm. The FP was at 45-46base with the 50#lb phil long chip. Point is that i have never seen a truck "run" good with that much blowby out the oil fill cap. Adding the bigger turbo and injectors on a higher miledge engine probably didnt help it's lifespan. The ECM was just bad luck and is a common problem, not at all related to the blowby symptoms. I will do a compression test soon.
