TY 0444 resurrection

Gentlemen of the Northeast, I have finally been reunited with my Typhoon. It has been in storage at my place in the Poconos for years since I did not have a decent place to work on it. The frame has a fair amount of surface rust, but the body seems to be in good shape. I am seriously contemplating pulling the body off and sandblasting the frame, so that I can apply some sort of coating (POR-15 seems to be the front runner, but taking suggestions) in hopes of keeping it from getting worse. I am not creating a show truck. I want to drive it. I think powder coating isn't worth it, as I have several coated pieces between my junkers and rust seems to creep in underneath and bubble out. The reason I ramble on, is I don't know how involved it is to remove the shell from the frame. I am trying to get this apart and back together before the weather gets too cold. That being said: would anyone be willing to help me remove the body from the frame if I supply beer and pizza/burgers? Any and all advice is welcome as well, as I really want to put this thing back together and start enjoying it again. The motor that was supposedly done already, is about half done and progress is being made finally (very long story), so I am close to having all of the pieces needed to put it together.

TLDR
Come to my house and consume beer and food while helping to remove shell from body or talk me out of doing this. Date to be determined, once prep work has been completed.

I can't help with advice, but I'd be willing to help lift it off. I don't drink much beer or each much pizza. :)

Usually when owners pull the body off the frame it becomes a much bigger 'while you're in their' project. Usually frame rust is limited to the surface if the rust is more extensive than that you have bigger problems.

I wouldn't probably tackle the frame rust unless you want to make it into a big project. I am sure if your Typhoon has lots other projects that would not be as extensive as frame off restoration (even if you only plan on just doing a Half-ass frame restoration.)

Big Dave (1BADV6 ) had a pretty trick setup he had in his garage last time I was there. He had his frame actually outside freshly done powder coated on a trailer. The whole typhoon cab was up on this gantry looking thing. Pretty sure that's what it was, he had made it definitely.. ( square 2 inch plus tube steel ) but if you saw what he had setup you would want to start doing it yourself.......

Dave if you see this put some pictures up ? Give other's motivation they haven't had in a while. I broke my phone and lost EVERYONE'S #s....

If it's just surface rust, apply POR15 as it is. It adheres better. If it's blasted, it needs a lot of treatment (MetalReady)and more prep. If you insist on blasting it, maybe zinc coat it then do an epoxy.

From my experience, unless your body and frame are about to totally crap out, get it driving and running right before dismantling it all. You'll save chipping paint etc.

Good luck!

This is my first inclination. The problem is, I have a ton of new sheet metal that is freshly painted (doors, fenders, hood, tailgate), and all newly painted cladding to go on it. I spoke with a friend of mine who has been in the restoration business, and he concurs with your approach. Pick up the body enough to do new mounts and ensure that it isn't falling apart. wire brush off the flakes, and go to town with POR 15. I think this is what I am going to do, so no need for anyone to Hercules off the cab. Thanks everyone.
