Ty 242 takes on AutoX

Got to try my hand at AutoX today. Holy crap was that fun. The novice school is awesome. The best learning experience was when the instructor drove the Ty. He pushed it hard and I'm really glad he did. It made me realize that this thing really can do this and actually be respectable.

I brought a buddy with me and he said the amount of chatter as ran was crazy. Everyone I meet commented on the Typhoon and were truly impressed as I went around the track. No one, including me expected it to do as well as it did.

I got better and better throughout the day and it is something I will definitely do again. I'll need to do a few things first. Probably weld up the stripped out sway bar screw hole on the drivers lower control arm, then get an adjustable proportioning valve for the brakes. Instructor could even tell rear wasn't braking as much as it should. Last, fix up some of the steering. Mines pretty sloppy; will convert to non-rag joint, and probably some new inner and outer tie rods. Last, one of my electric fans went out, I'll replace that too.

So hopefully I'll be pounding pavement again next month and run in the timed course.

I ran autocross for the first time at Shindig last year (I think, time flies), and it was a blast. I would do it again in a second.

It is a lot of fun, I ran with the BMW CCA club here in jersey and they loved it. Had a few guys jump in the truck with me for a few runs. Second time I ran I came in 4th place out of 13.

If you start to get serious and do it on a regular basis, start looking to change your suspension. Coilovers are the choice but obviously not cheap. You can throw on some good shocks though to start. I run adjustable AFCOs.

Our stock brakes suck. You can make the swap to C5 calipers and rotors relatively cheap for the front. If you go to a rear disk swap, you gotta get the proportioning valve for sure.

For the steering, get the jeep steering shaft and a zq8 steering box to tighten it up. If you don't have already, a rear sway bar makes a huge difference as well. Play around with your tire pressures. I run my fronts super high and the rears either at normal psi or just a bit over. You'll have to find the sweet spot on your Ty with your tires. It'll make the difference between seconds if you get it right.

GoPro yourself and post up videos!

My suspension is stock, except lowering blocks in the rear and a little turn of the torsion key to drop it in the front. I do have a sway bar in the rear and I think it saved my butt...making the truck drift more than roll. I had wanted to go coil-over for a while, but yes, its a little pricey. Need to sell my vette project car first.

For brakes I have Baer disk all the way around, so I will need the proportioning valve....I think that's a must and probably my first purchase.

So zq8 for steering box eh. Do I get that at a junk yard? its quick ratio I assume? The box should reduce the amount of movement for the steering wheel right, not necessarily the sloppyness? For the shaft will any jeep shaft work or certain years models?

For the tires I ran 40psi all the way around. I have zr1 wheels, and I think the fronts could go higher, maybe I'll try like 44 (max), for next months event. Or, maybe just drop the rear a little...we'll see. I'll lean on the experience of the other drivers to help me with that a bit.

Good call on a goPro....I think everyone there had one, except the novices. The instructor even went over why its useful.

Can't wait for next month!

Yes, zq8 is quicker ratio. Yes, junkyard. Do a search on the jeep shaft for the years that fit. Also, might not be a bad idea while doing those 2 upgrades, change out the steering shaft support bearing on the firewall. Pretty easy to do, not expensive. Most people tend to overlook this are of the steering and it can be a source of slop. Also, if you still have a stock steering wheel, consider getting a smaller one. It makes a huge world of difference in how much your swinging your arms and hands around the wheel. You dont want to "saw wood".

Spend the money on a rear sway. Trust me, it'll be the best $100-150 you spend that is a noticeable change when driving.

The prop valve will be a huge help to once you have it installed and dialed in. Ive so far kept the rear drums on the Sy, but I have a Baer prop valve sitting on the shelf to go with the rear disc conversion in the future.

I run my front tires at much higher psi. Almost in the 50psi range....its needed to help compensate the gnarly understeer our trucks have and help not to plow your sidewalls into the ground. Again, you'll have to play on the Ty. I know what works in my Sy. Different weight and balance on the 2 trucks.

For awhile, I kept my gopro inside the truck and in a position where I could see myself driving. It was a great learning tool to see mistakes I was making unknowingly (wrong hand positions are a biggie) and where I could have improved on the course with driving and positioning. I also came to realize just how much you slide around in the truck without proper restraint. My soon to come mods include a 5 point belt.

You should plan to attend our FL meet on Memorial weekend. It'll be in Clearwater. Bit of a drive for you (as for me), but it's a great place to meet the hardcore crew and get some ideas going.

Adam, you need to change you location on your sig to "Wakulla County" or "Crawfordville". Just trying to keep it real.
