using a late model s-10 ecm w hp tuners

Interested in seeing if this can be done or has been. I've been thinking of using a late model ecm and hp tuners on my syclone w a 4l80e, keeping the stock motor. I know the harness will be custom made. My sy is stock w a blown tranny, and I have a 98 vortech 4.3 sitting there for parts to convert. The question is what pcm and year OS, and can it control a 4.3l/4l80e. With the 99+ f body ls1 it can control a 4l80e so im hopeing it will do the same w a 4.3l. Ill just have to up grade the tune to a 3bar.

Re: using a late model s-10 ecm w hp tuners

I have been obtaining parts for this switch for a few months. I believe the biggest cost to do this is the harness Current performance wanted $800 to do it. So I picked up a $140 used 2002 4.3 0411 pcm/harness a gm pcm pin out and just started going through it. Right now the 3x wheel and balancer are at the machine shop. Not sure if I have to take the double roller chain off and go back to a Single until Monday but it will work. Leadfoot is doing it so I am trying it. Its worth the try and might be cheaper option than a standalone.

Even if you can't get a segment swap for the 4L80E under a 4.3 OS you can do a "relay" mod to run a 4L80E under a 4L60E tune.

I can supply anybody that wants it a 2156 OS (the one lead foot used) set up for the 4.3 with the 4l80e segment swap already done. It weill not have a COS upgrade in it, since I use EFI and that's what Leadfoot is using to tune his.
Along with adding the crank sensor, switching to the newer style distributer, you also change to the 2 wire knock sensor

You do not have to take the roller chain off just the balancer- and timing cover obviously...

The 4.3 harness works fine, just make you own fuel injector harness. -bought all my stuff off of E-bay for low $$

Get the right timing cover or you will have leaks

What I found with the Edelbrock double roller was the reluctor wheel would hit the chain. Looks to need about .025 clearance to make sure your not grinding the reluctor away. Worst case I could switch back to the single chain/gears and it would clear it easily. The balancer is being cut at the machine shop so the pulleys will line up.I also have the 96-99 vortec 350 timing cover looks to line up perfectly. $20 dollar ebay item.

Leadfoot I have been keeping track of your build. Its one of the reasons I am attempting this myself. Poconojoe I will probably get the 2156 software from you as I am going with the 4l80e. Thank you both for your help. Current Performance makes a relay/fuse block that makes the harness stand alone. For $95 you can't beat it.

GM makes the only HD timing chain I could find that clears the reluctor wheel. They made it for the 350 vortec truck motors. I don't know if you really need an HD chain since its a roller cam motor and there isn't as much stress on the chain, as there would be with a solid or hydralic flat tappet cam

Poconojoe, that was the only single timing set I found also. I am having the machine shop taking .025 off of the back of the reluctor wheel its worth the try if not its $20 to get another. $50 for the single timing set from gm performance parts 12371043. I should find out in a day or so what the next step is.
